The factory backspacing is 6 3/4" on stock rims. If your 9" is 2" narrower on each side, your backspace should be 4 3/4". The old way was to use a plumb bob after centering your new diff at ride height. I'm going off of my 02 ss car with the 9.5" 10 spokes.

Using a plump bob helps determine the center of something by hanging a weighted item off of a string and seing where it hangs in relation ship to whatever it is you are trying to center, or measure from. I am sure that did not clear anything up, but if you saw one, you'd see right away what I was talking about...
For instace, you can use the plumb bob method to determine whether or not your rear is centered. It is not the best most accurate way, but it is a good start and can give you a good indication!
