I have broke 2 sets of 4.10 gears and 1 carrier. Stripped the gears in the torsion. I have been in it a few times.

change to 4.10 gears
broke 4.10 gears and replaced with 4.10 gears
broke carrier didn't damage new gears swapped carriers
broke 4.10 gears, paid shop to put 3.23 back in

This is 2 years of racing. I paid $80 for a spare rear with 4.10 gears. $100 for new 4.10 gears. $300 for a shop to put the 3.23 back in b/c I am too busy and it is too damn cold to mess with it.

10 lot is on it's way out the door. I haven't decided which route to take yet. Whatever route I take it will be on a small go fast budget. 8.5 GM, 8.8 or 9 in Ford. No 12 bolt.

Ring gear is usually the first to go.
I sold my 4.10 rear before it exploded and got a 9".

My own 10 bolt failure record:

1. Destroyed every bearing (except axle bearings) in the darn thing. Quite literally large chunks missing out of the rollers & races of every bearing.
2. Torsen diff go blooey.
3. Line I painted down axles when doing number 1 above...was wrapped about 1/3 the way around when I went to replace rh axle bearing.

I was able to get a used axle assy some years ago and thus had enough spare parts to fix numbers 2 and 3. Sick of patching it together tho. After I get back from the sandbox I will be rid of that stupid axle.

(Knock on wood), I haven't broken my 10 bolt (YET), however there are a number of weak links. I'm guessing either my ring and pinion or posi is going to go first. Hopefully I can get a 9" rear in there before I tear the 10 bolt slam to pieces (as it does have a little resale value while it's still functional)!

Yes. If it were as easy as replacing one part and having a great rear end, 9"s & 12 bolts would not fly off the shelves as they do

Do numerically higher gears add to the stress/more likely to break?

yes, you have less material and you put more stress on the rear

Aboslutely. When one runs the stock 3.42's they are less likely to blow as the torque can be more absorbed by the TC or clutch compared to say a 4.10 gear.

I got $500.00 for my used 4.10 10 bolt rear end in great condition before it had the chance to pop.

thats the reason i will not put 4.10's in my stock rear, though i have contemplated a 3.73 swap, how much more stress would the 3.73 be over the 3.42?

Some small amount, no way to absolutely measure or gauge.

4:10's go boom!!!!!!!! for a little extra insurance take the rear to a reputable welder and have him weld your axle tubes solid it helps reduce the flex that causes the ring gear to explode I have a guy that does it for $75 and to me it is worth it. And i have also found in mine and my buddies M-6 full bolt on f-bodys 3:73's gave us better ET's than 4:10's due to the fact that with the 4:10's we were alway out of the powerband in fourth just before the end of the track and either way stayin in it or going to 5th slowed us down with the 3:73's our cars would pull right through I personally dropped 4 tenths and my buddy 3 tenths
