Default 4th Gen Posi in 3rd Gen Rear...

Will it work? I have a friend with a 86 3rd gen a4 and 3.23's and I'm curious as to whether it will work or not.

No, the axles have a different spline count.

What if you were swap in the 4th gen axles as well. They have the same bolt pattern and would fit the the spline on the posi. Would that work because you can pick up those axles for dirt cheap everywhere. I'm just curious and I appreciate the responses guys!

The early 3rd gen cars used 26 spline axles. Some 1989 and all 1990 and later F-bodies got 28 spline axles. The 82-92 are a different length than the 93-02. So yes, you can use that differential in his rear, but you will need to use some 28 spline axles from an 89-92 car.

Yes it will fit but you need 28 spline axles. The axles out of the newer are different lengths.
