A few ?'s about my broken axle
I broke an axle yesterday at the track(stock rear), what are the chances I damaged the carrier as well? I didnt really just want to by a new set of axles and throw them in without inspecting the unit.
I dont have much experience tearing down rearends; if I removed the carrier to inspect it, would it be as easy as just bolting it back in or will it be more in depth than that?

Pretty simple to remove. Make sure and mark the caps so they go back on the same way and the same side. Also tag the shims so if you do put the stock diff back in you keep the backlash set were it was originally. I have full spec sheets and installation instruction available. Let me know if you need them.

Thanks for the help Jeff, Ill let you know if I need the spec sheet and instructions. Honestly, Im hoping it is damaged, I would be going with a whole new rear if thats the case.

i have seen that several times. your diff unit probably isn't hurt, but you are gonna definetly gonna want to take it out for inspection and cleaning. there will be more chunks of metal left in it.
remove the 4 channel abs sensors(if so equipped) from the backing plates
mark the caps and remove them. they are side and direction specific.
remove the retaining bolt and pinion pin(or spacer block) from the diff unit
push in the good axle and drop out the c-clip, remove the axle
using a larger prybar, carefully remove the diff unit and side bearing shims. do not pry directly on the gear teeth. the shims and bearing races are side and direction specific, also. be sure to mark the bearing races and shims for reference for re-install. be sure to remove the diff unit squarely and not bind it.
do your inspection and cleanup. i would wipe out the case as best as possible, maybe even use brake cleaner.
if all is good then re-install the original parts.
put it all together and install the diff unit with only the drivers side shim.
seat the passenger side bearing race into the bearing. install the passenger side shim as far as you can by hand, then very carefully tap the shim in all the way with a poly hammer or some other soft tool. be sure to drive it straight in and not crack the shim. do not force it.
reverse the rest of the disassembly process to complete the job.
bearing cap bolts should be torqued to 60 ft. lbs.
it may not be a bad idea to replace your outer axle seals at this time. it could save you time and money in the long run.

I started looking at the cost of gears etc into my 10 bolt and I began to think of the purchase of a 9" as not spending $2000+ but rather saving 500+ wasted on a 10Bolt. (Think like this and youw ill find yourself a new rearend)
