Default Waste of money 3.73 10 bolt?

I was planning on putting a 3.73 ring and pinion in my stock 7.5" 10 bolt. After reading so many posts about them, I'm thinking about saving for FORD 9". My car will mostly be a DD, with occasional trips to dragstrip. What should I do? Is it a waste of money to spend $700.00 on ring and pinion in 10 bolt?

The 7.5"s are weak but not as weak as alot of people make them out to be.It has ALOT to do with how well it was setup as to how long they well last.

If your car is a dd bolt on car not putting a whole lot of power down then Id say just hang with a 10 bolt with some 3.73's
If you have something putting a little more donkies to the ground and your car leaves like superman kicked the back bumper then Id say go for a 12 bolt

why would it be $700?

You can do things to help your 10 bolt last a little longer... By putting in new Bearings, seals, stronger griddle etc. But they are like the lottery, if you're running 10sec 1/4miles on a 6-speed, you got the winning ticket lol.
Automatic=12 bolt
M6=9"

When she was my daily driver, I installed 3.73 gear and a 2800 stall converter. Now, she's mostly for the track and still running the stock 10 bolt w/a 4.10 gear. Knock on wood....she's holding up. Check the video below in my sig. running w/ MT 325/50 drag radials.

if it is your dd i would go ahead and throw a set of gears in there. I dont mind spending a little money on my 10 bolt just for the fun factor. BUT just know that it WILL break if you go dumping the clutch on some sticky tires. Now i would NEVER dump $700 into a 10 bolt. You are almost halfways to a 12 bolt, S60, or 9". But a set of gears installed shouldnt run you more than $400. If you do it yourself and know what your doing you could install gears, new bearings and seals and possibly a girdle for $400.

My old 10bolt w/4.10s had many many passes on a stock convertor...footbraking...and a handfull with the convertor. Held just fine 3k+ launchs...although was a little noisy towards the end before I put the 12bolt in

Either way 700$ is WAY too much for ring and pinion...should be able to find them alot cheaper than that.

Wow, $700.00 for a ring and pinion. That guy is making some good margins LOL. Like others have said. If you are not putting down more than 400hp and you are using the car as a primary DD the stock rear will be fine, just don't buy the $700.00 ring and pinion. If you are running good power and plan on doing a lot of racing save your money and go with a stronger rearend. Check out our site for pricing on gears and kits. Should put a smile on your face.

$700 is outrageous. No I would not spend that for a ring and pinion.

If you have a shop with a better price though, then yes I would do 3.73's in a ten bolt as long as you are realistic about the potential consequences. Especially if it's an auto, it should be ok for a while.

I installed 3.73s into our 93 manual formula (was 500hp blown, now n/a) and they've held up to drag strip passes and driving for 2 years now. Not saying that is the norm, though.

My guess would be an A4. Going from 3.42's to 3.73's shouldn't make a .7 difference. He probably went from 2.73's to 3.73's. They do really wake an auto up though. I knew a kid that threw some 3.73's in his auto 96 T/A and it was a sh*t-ton faster.

I LOVE my 3.73 gears! You can do it for under $250 including all parts. I wasn't about to do them myself so I had a friend "help" me for $150. I would much rather spend $400 on a daily driver than $2500+ for what may be overkill.
Just my two pennies.

lol. I sold my gears because I changed my engine setup, and 3.73 wasn't really going to work anymore.

Uh huh...
we'll see how they hold up behind a 4000 stall and some MT or Nittos.

Whats your setup?

It's under the knife now for a TT setup. I think the 3.73 would be too much gear for it
