Default Anyone run across this????

The m6 in my 99 ta decided to commit suicide the other day. Bought one from a junk yard out of a 98 firebird. Long story short the driveshaft wouldn't work. Turns out the yoke was too small to slip onto the trans. I'm no expert but I'm on my third f-body and try to learn as much as possible about my cars. This didn't seem possible. I thought that all driveshafts from f-bodys were the same from 93-02. I put a shaft from a 99 z28 into my 97 z and it fit perfectly. So I went to the local dealer to double check and see that they wern't multiple parts numbers for yokes maybe m6 and a4 different. Of cource only one part number came up. So I called the junk yard to see about what we could do to fix my problem. Turns out that according to his database from 98-02 some cars left the factory with an m6/3.23 combo. Apperently these cars had bigger yokes than the normal m6/3.42 combo that most of us have. He is gonna send me the driveshaft out of the car the trans was pulled from to fix my problem. I thought that the only year that the gears in the m6 cars were different was in 93. I saw something about them having 2.73 gears in the rear. If anyone has ever heard of this or something similar I would like to know. Like I said I'm no expert but I'm interested to learn new things and this is pretty new to me. Thanks in advance.

That's what I thought. But my question now is how could I have this problem. We took the yoke off my drivshaft and it was to small to slip onto my trans. How'd this happen, and if the other yoke is the same, how am I gonna make it fit?

Id have to say that any gears higher than 3.42 would be a bitch to drive with an M6

Are you sure that the car at the junkyard dosent have some aftermarket rigging done to it

First thing... are you sure the junkyard is a T56? Make sure it didn't come out of a V6 firebird... I'm not sure if the output shafts are different sizes... and to DWZ28 I have 4.10's and its not a bitch to drive.

I agree, 4.10s are a blast and really woke the car up some more. You have a great powerband in just about every gear. I would verify exactly what it came out of. Everything from the driveshaft back is all the same including the output shaft splines. Unless it's something aftermarket.

i was saying that with 2.73 or 3.23s it would be a bitch not a gear like a 4.10
unless ive been told wrong my entire life i thought that a high ratio was like a 2.73 and a ratio like a 4.10 was low, but i may be wrong
when i do my gear swap im going to 4.10s

you're right DWZ28, higher ratio gears are numerically lower. But I did an A4-M6 swap and left my 2.73's in. It's been about a year and it's not a bitch to drive the car. Sure it doesn't put my power where I want it exactly and acceleration is slower then it could be, but I get hella great gas mileage! 35+ on the highway, about 22 city. Anyways sorry I don't know anything about the driveshaftproblem lol. just thought I'd chime in

The trans didn't come from a v6. Just looking at it I could tell that. Anyway I don't think that a v6 m5 would bolt up to an ls1. It might but I dont think an m5 would look like an m6 or say Tremec on the side of it. I was thinking maybe someone had built the trans and had a driveshaft made for it, but I was just wondering if what the junkyard guy said was true or if he was just blowing smoke up my ***.

I did a swap from a4 to m6 in my car and never had any issues with the steel lt1 driveshaft goin into the a4 ls1 trans or m6 trans... eventually i got an aluminum driveshaft when i bought a diff with 3.42's in it and still didn't have any problems... I think he was just telling you whatever he could to get off the phone...
