Howling stock rear end
My rear end is somewhat noisy. The car has 60k miles and I have no leaks and never changed the fluid. At highway speeds it sounds like a faint mud tire going down pavement. Driving at slow speeds sounds like a faint vacuum. Sometimes I can't talk inside the car at 70 mph because the bassy noise from the rear end fills the cabin. Any help?

Mine is doing the same thing, and I'm at 72,000. I'm going to let it slide for awhile and see if it gets any worse. If it does, it'll be a good excuse to do a gear swap while it's apart.
I had a '95 GT that howled the whole time I drove it, which was a little over a year. It also howled while my friend owned it before me, which was another year or so. Never gave me any problems so I just kept on cruisin'.
I know that doesn't help much. I'm just saying it probably won't fall apart on you in betwixt now and whenever you get it fixed.

most likely a bearing problem. start at the axles, if they're ok, then pull the carrier out and inspect the outer bearings, if they're ok, then pull the pinion gear out and look those over. make sure to inspect the races, as they will normally show brinneling when you get a noise like you have described.

I've got under 50k on mine and have the same problem. I need to replace all the axle bearings as it had run low on fluid. A friend that works at a dealership quoted me $750 to fix it, normally its around $1k which is a HUGE bummer. If you have a way to press the bearings on it could be done much cheaper though.
