Default gear install question

how hard should the carrier be to turn when you reinstall it. im using the stock shims, they work perfect for the mesh pattern. you have to hit the shims pretty hard to get them back in place

It should have some resistance, it should not Freely spin. You should hav the pound it in with a dead blow mallet. If you can install it without a mallet it is too loose.

I just did mine & set to .006" between the ring & pinion. Had to use a mallet to install shims, as noted above. Turns by hand w/ effort, turns easier w/ open end wrench on ring gear bolt, but, in either case it's snug. The previous differential was snug as well. It obviously spun easier before re-installing axles. So, if backlassh is .006"-.010" where you are now, it sounds good to me.
