Wink Is regular Valvoline 80w-90 gear oil ok for 9"?

Before I installed my 9" I asked what kind of oil to use and the response I got was regular dino gear oil, 80w-90. I did just that. I bought 3 quarts of regular Valvoline 80w-90 gear oil.

I have been having issues with Scott at DLS for some time now and now he is telling me that it was the type/brand of gear oil that caused my noise problems.

By reading this, it should get you up to speed:

This is what Scott sent me a little bit ago, trying to pin the problem on me. If you do some research, there were almost a dozen people having the same problem with gear noise.

I've called around, local and on line, there is no way I can buy a fully built center section for my application for $1,250 shipped to my door.

I'd like to stay on topic please, this thread is about gear oil. I am interested in what others have to say about the brand/type of gear oil I used.

Yes it is. 80w90 will be fine for street use. Track use, I would step up to a 80w140

Geeeese, you've had way too much trouble. Ask for the build sheet. If the whine stayed for that long, my guess is that either the pinion to ring gear mesh was incorrect, &/or the ring gear back lash was incorrect. Either way, if it's damaged beyond use, then the original cost is all that you can hope to re-claim. As to gear oil; the best product, IMO is Shaeffers #267 (80W-90), it's moly based, climbs the gears, & offers high temperature protection. Once you get her back runnin', Shaeffers is the way to go. Shaeffers 80W-90 will protect like a 85W-140 without the restriction of the heavier oil. Vist BITOG & see for yourself, Shaeffers compared to other "highly marketed" brands.

& no Valvoline 80W-90 did not cause the damage in that short time period.
