4:10's with an a4?
Hey, i was looking at some old threads about 4:10's and i was wondering if it was true that with motive 4:10's, i wont need a paddle kit. i was also wanting to know if it is a good idea to run 4:10's instead of the typical 3:73's. why and why not please
Thanks, Mark

I wouldn't...I have 2:73's now and going to 3:73's..A4's have different gearing in the trans than the M6's do..Or...you could try it and let us all know how it goes.. I think it will be too steep and you won't be able to keep the tires on the ground..Is it a street car or strip car?

both lol, i was thinking that it was too steep also, but idk what im going to do yet, my suspention will play a lot into it because i was looking at some taller back tires to help mellow it down, but i dont want to kill how good the car handles. im probably going to go with 3:73's, but would the motive 4:10's work without haveing to get a paddle kit?

what if i put bigger tires in the back though, i was looking at doing some that were 28.5 inches tall... which would make a 4.10 equal roughly a 3.90, correct me if im wrong

A 4.10 gear with 28.5" tires is nearly identical to a 3.73 gear with stock tires. Check out this gear calculator from the sticky up top. http://www.f-body.org/gears/
I wonder how many of those that say 4.10 is to steep have actually ever ran it? There is only a couple of hundred rpm difference at 70 mph when compared to 3.73.

yea i looked at that, it was about 250 rpm more for 4.10's at 70 than 3.73's. that really doesnt seem that bad, plus if i ran the larger tires it would counter that effect. im not sure what ill do, someone is wanting to trade me with a 96 impala ss with low miles, im thinking of taking it.

Weird why would you be in 4th gear by 30 mph? 4.10's are a lot of 1st gear, but whether the car hooks or not doesn't just depend on how much first gear you have, tires and chassis setup are how you take care of traction issues.
I would run the 28"s and use the 4.10 gear, a car with more gear and a taller tire will leave good. Compared to an A4, 4.10's would actually be like a 4.72 rear gear in a T-56/M6. People do run cars with more 1st which are usually higher rpm stuff.
As far as the idea, I think the 4.10 with the 28 or 28.5 tire would work good and I know people talk about rpm on the freeway and stuff, but with the taller tire and 4.10's you'll be close to the ratio of 3.73's but you'll have the advantage of a bigger tire.
I say go for it. I've had 3.42, 3.73, 4.10 and 4.56 in my T-56 car. The 4.56 would be close to your 1st gear ratio with 4.10's and a 3.73 in an A4 would be like a 4.30 gear in a T-56 to get the same 1st gear.
Just keep in mind that if you add nitrous or FI you might be limited by mph range with that much gear, so you'll need a higher revving cam if you start to get up there in mph.

Under normal driving it shifts into 4th just over 30, lockup around 40...wot is a different story. If I didn't drive on the highway so much I would love them. Hell I even picked up a few mpg in the city with them.

I ran 4.10's behind my 4L60E for a good ~2 years or so. They worked AWESOME!! Even on my street tires, it cut my 1/4 mile time from ~13.4 down to 13.02! (and I picked up almost 2 mph).
I ALSO had 3.73's back in 2003. They worked fine, although I had a "whiny" gear set, so they didn't stay in the car very long.
On the highway, both 3.73's and 4.10's are VERY similar. My "average" fuel mileage never changed much between the stock 2.73's, to 3.73's, to 4.10's. I always seem to get ~230 miles to a tank (+/- a bit) no matter what ratio I've been running. 100% highway, the mileage got cut from ~310 miles down to ~265 or so from 2.73's --> 4.10's. Oh well!
Traction? Let's see, wasn't an issue at all! With the low ratio, IF/WHEN you spin the tires off the line, it's actually at a slower "speed" than if you had something higher (ie: 2.73's or 3.23's) and the tires actually hook up much quicker than if you get them spinning with high gears! Surprising, eh?
I wouldn't hesitate to run 4.10's behind an A4 again, except I've gone a completely different direction with my car at this point (I've already swapped the 4L60E for a T56, and I have a set of 3.73's to go in ... all for road racing ).
Keep in mind, for drag racing, the goal is to cross the line in your 1:1 gear, which is 3rd for the A4, and 4th for the M6. Guess what, it doesn't matter what transmission you've got, if you're running a 4.10 behind either one, it's the exact same RPM's!!
