Default oil for 10 bolt

I plan to change my rear end fluid out but I'm not sure if I have a Torsens or a Auburn. Yes I did do a search! I do know if I take the cover off I will be able to tell, but then i would not be able to drive to the auto store. Also what is the most common oil to use in the 10 bolt.

Thanks

Default Gear Oil

If you have a 2000 it should be a torsen diff. I would just buy two bottles of gear oil and limited slip additive. It won't hurt to put the additive in no matter which differential it is (but it is needed for an Auburn). I run Mobil 1 80W-90 and haven't had any problems. Some people don't like synthetic, in that case I would reccomend Valvoline 80W-90. Some gear oils like Red Line come with the additive in it already. You just need to read the bottle. Hope this helps.

Use to run M1 75w90 ($15 a qt), but it thinned down after long and hard runs and the rear got noisy and clunky. Switched to valvoline 95/140 and it is alot better, no more noises. I think the thicker the better.

Yes you should, I bought a rear with 40k on it and the fluid looked like tar.

im going to go ahead and take your advise and change out the oil in the back, needed or not, question is, what oil do you guys think would be my best bet, i dont care the price, i want the "best" you can get.

also there is a small leak that looks like it is coming from the oil pan drain, is this a common issue, or is the guy that owned it before me an idiot and ruined the seal?

I think I used 75/90 Mobile 1 gear oil. Go to Advance Auto and ask them for it. Don't forget the additive. I'm not sure what brand or anything, but tell them limited slip additive.

If your oil pan drain plug is leaking, Advance should have new gaskets for that, too.

yea im sure its the plug, im thinking they over tightened it the last time it got changed or checked and blew the seal. im taking it in to get inspected by a tech just to check and see if everything else is running fine since i just bought it.

thanks for the help, its much appreciated.

sthe torsen rear end is on most firebird and camaro models, special option cars like the firehawks and some slp ss came with auburn diffs. use a 75-140 oil for extra protection and oil break down, that's what i'll use when i change my fluid. and torsen diffs don't need additive but doesn't hurt to add.
