Default 9-Bolt Rearend...

Hey Guys/Gals, question for you. Did GM have a 9-bolt rearend? Someone I work with says his buddy has a 9-bolt rearend in his GM (not sure which model) car. I know there's a 10-bolt and a 12-bolt, but I didn't think there was a 9-bolt. Unless he's confusing it with the Ford 9 inch diff. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

yes, there was a 9-bolt rear end in some 3rd gen cars. A third-gen site might be able to give you some more information about it.

ya gm did have a 9 bolt in the 3rd gens

i know because i baught one for my 3rdgen

they are stronger then the standered 10 bolt because it has a bigger ring gear and has 28 spline axles compared to 3rdgen 10 bolt rears which have only 26 spline before 89

How would this be as a cheaper option for an LS1? I've seen these rears go for less than $300 complete on sites. I never planned on making 400rwhp or so, and I already have a 12 bolt. However, I was just asking out of curiosity. If somebody was running a huge verter with weight reduction in an auto that is in the 11's but didn't need the benefits of a 9 inch.. How would this compare in price, and strength? I've read guys throwing 400-500 hp to them in the 3rd gens..
What would it take to convert to 4th gen?

They really are not any stronger than a 10 bolt (maybe not as strong). I'd not waste time on them.

There are only about 2 gear ratios available for them and they are very expensive (I think they run about $375 for a ring and pinion). Thought I'd mention that.
