It's probably a shot rear end to be honest. How many miles are on the car?
I'd crack it open and see the damage. You can always throw in gears with a master install kit and be as good as new and faster.

The car has 115k on it. Other than the noise when off the gas it is acting ok. I will go ahead and put it on stands and pull the cover and see what I see when I get a chance.

i have one of these but its more of a noise + vibration kinda a wuow wuow wuow just at the brink of letting off from a cruising speed. I can kinda play a tune with the gas pedal it sucks. I think mine is a bent housing or axel shaft.

hey no problem....i wouldnt evr recommend putting 4.10's in a stock rear-end....its kinda like throwing ur money away in some cases....switching to 3.73's is a good idea a much stronger gear...ive had mine for almost 600 miles, im goin to take it back to the guy who put thm in and have him take a look at it and make sure they settled right, and put some more gear lube in it....i did notice a little power difference switching gears though, i gained a little more top end power which is nice, and a little but not much mpg!

If that's the case, it may be that the crush collar has opened up some clearance and taken some preload off the pinion bearing. Not too unusual with all those miles and if it has ever been driven hard (my collar opened up about 0.010" with just a couple of bad wheel-hops after 80K miles!). You may not see anything with the cover off. To be certain, you would need to remove the carrier and check the pinion preload. If the preload is short, and since the noise is still only on coast-down, you may be able to 'cinch-up' the preload torque and quiet it down a bit. However, I wouldn't expect much with 115K old bearings (having said that, I know someone who did just that and is up to another 40K already!).
