Default I think my rear end bit the dust

Coming back home from Crestview today on I-10. 70 Mile trip. Cruise control on at 80mph. Going down a hill the cruise obviously lets off the gas a bit. Well as it does that I hear this extremely loud whine. Every time the car decelerates this happens. Get home to Chipley and stop at Walmart. When we get back in the car I ease out in 1st and let the car coast. I could feel the gears in the back catching and slowing the car down. I thought it was going to lock up on me. Get out and look on the ground and theres oil on the ground. Look under the car from the rear and the torque arm is wet with fluid.

1. What's wrong? I know probably a toasted diff.
2. What's it going to cost?
3. Any better alternatives to exact replacment?
4. I don't want to go a super cheap route and I also don't want super expensive. But I want something that's not going to scare away potential buyers, since this car is still for sale at the moment.

Swapping in another 10 bolt rear that is used but in good shape may be your cheapest route to go, but you won't know until you take the cover off and find out what is wrong. Bob

Sounds like it might have been running low on fluid, then got hot & took out the pinion seal, the rest is history when all the fluid came out.

The whine is most likely from the pinion bearing. Looks like the pinion seal let go allowing the bearing to run dry and start to seize up. Unfortunately there is no easy fix for that. The rearend would have to torn completely down to fix, at that point it will be pretty expensive. I agree with the previous poster, try to find a good used rearend if you are only a very tight budget.

If you want to throw a 10 bolt back in I have a 4 channel 3.23 low mileage one that will be coming out of my car this week

I plan on getting it looked at Monday. But, how much for yours? Also, what is involved in making the 3.23 work right with my car since it's a 3:42 in there now.

I'd like to retain the original ratio though.
