Stock rear end: what is this piece?

Stock rear end: what is this piece? Last night I was playing "Find the rattling noise" (panhard bar, again 
) with my stock rear and noticed the diff seemed awfully dirty. I hosed it down with some cleaner and started wiping - I literally brushed up against this little plastic thing and it popped out and fell on the floor. It didn't seem to be held in with anything and it took almost no effort to pop it loose which struck me as pretty odd if not worrisome.
The pic is taken from the passenger wheel well looking inwards towards the diff, the mystery piece is circled. What is it? Is it normally that loose?

Interesting. Nothing holds it in? I barely brushed it with my hand and it popped out, I was kinda worried that a big enough jolt while driving might pop it out again. Then again considering how 'well constructed' the rest of the stock rear is...
