Default Moser M9 vs 12 bolt for track and daily driver

Ok here is the deal... I have a Moser 12 bolt, aluminum cover, 3.73s Trutrac..

My m6, z28 is a daily driver, and it will see both drag racing and road course / track racing.... few track meets a year and probably 10+ passes per month in drag racing, and driver daily to college, work, mountains, beach, vacation, wherever...

I had the 12 bolt on my bolt on LS1, In all reality I didnt like how it felt around the track... Sure it let me launch when I drag raced, but my 10 bolt felt a lot better around the track (handling wise) .. Now I will be installing a 402 soon, and I plan on driving it with the 12 bolt 3.73s... But I was curious to see what people are thinking about the Moser M9...

Is the M9 an improvement over the Moser 12 bolt for my application? I mean Im sure it is for drag racing, but for road course and more importantly daily driving, is the M9 a better rear?? Since the 12 bolt threw off my handling and added unsprung weight, this is why I was considereing the M9 as an improvement..

Im only thinking so, because I heard it was light, even lighter than the 10 bolt!! (or at least thats what I heard)

Are there any road racers or AutoX people here using a M9?

So key points:

Something that will handle 500+ RWHP (or more in the future)
Something that will improve my handling over the 12 bolt
Something that weighs less than a 10 bolt (or at least my 12 bolt)

If the M9 is worth it, then I can just sell my 12 bolt and buy a M9...

Thanks in advance..

The M9 is about the same weight as the 10 bolt, but I don't think it is any lighter. I don't see why the M9 wouldn't make for a great road racing rear, we're currently setting one up for a guy in Brazil who will be road racing it. Bob

Good luck on something lighter than a 10 bolt, are you thinking of something like a fab 9 inch?
I love my 9 inch, I know I could do any number of stupid things and it wouldnt even scratch the clearcoat. Its kinda noisy at first, but after about a thousand miles the only time I can hear it at all is when I downshift and decelerate.
The moser 9 inch is a moser copy of the ford 9 inch, the standard in bullet proof rear ends for forever. I dont think its an improvemant so much as a contemporary of the 12 bolt.
As far as DD, well the 9 inch was never desinged for an fbody so be prepared for it to bang out a home for itself for a while.

Yes, he is talking about the M9 which is the Moser fabricated 9 inch that came out last Fall. Here is a video of it from last Falls Sema Show. Bob

Wow and I thought my regular run-of -the-mill moser 9 inch was tough that looks insane! So thats more of a straight race application that can be driven on the street, as opposed to a more street oriented rear end that can take some track time, correct?

Thanks Bob, But Id like to see some opinions of people running the M9, that road race themselves..

BTW I purchased my Moser 12 bolt from you over a year ago from you, thanks a lot for your great customer service...

BTW, Ive asked this before, does anyone have the weights as a list to compare the 10 bolt, 12 bolt, 9", M9? etc??

The torque arm can make some noise an they don't want people bitching about it. My dual exhaust and the F-1A blower are loud enough the torque arm can't be heard. I really doubt it is louder than my Spohn 405 was. Bob

Thanks I just saw that thread about the weights... Im still looking, but so far so no 12 bolt weight... well as long as the M9 weighs as much as a 10 bolt, If anyone is down to buy my 12 bolt ill sell it, and get a M9 and pay the difference..

Loud as in what kind of noise? CLunking? or squeaking?

if its clunking, im sure a rubber bushing can be put in the place of impact.. IDK about squeaking, after all its a DD and I quited my exhaust, i dunno if I want a lot of noise, then again, if its no big deal I can live with it... its not me that the noise will bother, its for family or friends that im concerned about..

I read this and I remembered that we had measured a Moser 12 bolt back in '02 that we installed in my Z28. The 12 bolt was 47 lbs heavier than the 10 bolt. Bob

thanks, just curious was this with a limited slip or a spool, because I believe spools are lighter, also was this with an aluminum center section?

Noisy as in Vibrations/rattles. I didn't put grease in mine and drove it around and to the track.. Got home that was the first thing I did, It helped out. But it will still rattle around some.

The Moser 12 bolt was an Eaton posi, if that is the rear you are asking about. Bob

You might try frrax.com...those guys road race like it's their job, and I know a few have experience with upgrading the rear axle.
