Default Help. 2.73 to 3.73

I just bought a 99 A4 Trans Am not too long ago, with the standard 2.73 package. Eventually, i'd like to upgrade to 3.73's. What brand gears would be best and what are the necessities of upgrading? Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

GM gears are the most quiet...... i have tried several ........
you will need a tune for shift points & axle ratio............

u will need to get your PCM recalibrated goin from 2.73 to 3.73. i just swapped my 2.73 out for 3.73 and it pulls hard heck.

as for brands the GM motives are very popular cuz they are quiet. but i3. also hear the richmond brand gears are very strong but whine loud also.

also make sure u get the 3.73 with the 2.73 carrier.

yea you need to buy gears with the series 2 carrier. you will also need tires for the new found low end power.

If you plan on keeping the 2 series carrier to save money you have to go with a thick ring gear which means Motive Performance or Richmond Gears are your only option. We have calculators on our website to check your rpms. Let me know if you have any questions.

Run the GM gears. I had the motives and whine a little. The 373,s I had somehow got water in the rearend and have 3.42,s now.

As Jaws said...go with a thick gear.... GM gears may be quieter...but they don't make a gear with 2 series..so you'd have to run a spacer...which isn't the greatest idea..

i'm consiering this exact swap myself. what is the difference in the 2 and 3 series carriers? is it an easy sawp to just get a 3 seires and replace the 2 series or is there something more indepth about it? If the 2 series is just as capable as the 3Series as far as strength goes?

Sorry dont mean to hijack, but might help you also.

2 series gears have a thicker ring gear. You CAN swap a 3 series carrier/gearset into it, but IMO, it's easier to just buy the 2 series "thick" gears and not worry about trying to find a new differential.

You can check out the For Sale section...I bought a 3 series carrier with 3.42 gears for $100 shipped, but I never used it, just sold it and decided to go with all new parts.

I bought Motive 2 series Thick gear 3.73s and bearing kit for around $280 from a sponsor..

And about the strength part...you are putting money into a 10 bolt, either way you go the thing is still weak..haha
