[VR] 1,024whp/1,043wtq Camaro ZL1 Build Thread/Video/Pictures!
The 5th Gen Camaro is a great base platform for modding as we all already know. When Chevrolet decided to drop their monster LSA motor in the front of the ZL1, it just brought that much more capability from a motor that has been proven to take big power pretty easily. When you start messing with the displacement of the LSA block…things can start to get insane!
This black ZL1 started off life as the first ZL1 delivered in GA at Rick Hendrick Chevrolet. Our client brought it straight to the shop so we could start tearing into this new 5th gen setup and it officially became the car to develop and R&D some LSA performance packages for the ZL1. At the end of the first round of mods, this car was rolling with our VR Stage IV package making 700rwhp.
While that was really impressive for the first round of mods already, our client decided that he really wanted to take this build to the next level. After looking at all of the available options, we decided to do a 416c.i. stroker combination on the OEM block with a nitrous outlet spray bar system and a dedicated fuel cell in the trunk to feed the 150 shot.
So what was the result? 1024.56whp/1043.29wtq!
Here is the dyno video of the pull. Check out how this car just wants to yank off the dyno!
http://youtu.be/uD0kcBAWzEg After the car was complete, we all headed to the track for some test and tune. The conditions were horrible as traction was an issue for everyone. Even considering that, our customer was able to run 10.88@131 without nitrous on the 416. Obviously there is a lot more left in the car and it will be seeing more track time soon to really extract an ET the car is truly capable of.
This 1,000whp+ ZL1 is driven regularly on the street and will be making its maiden ˝ mile pass in Ocala this January.
Here is how the mod list ended up on this ZL1 after the last stage.
- VR 416c.i. stroker – LSA block
- Callies crankshaft/Callies rods/Diamond pistons
- VR custom camshaft
- VR/WCCH Stage II ported CNC cylinder heads
- VR ported 1.9L blower and snout w/ Nick Williams 102mm throttle body
- Snow Performance methanol system
- Lingenfelter 2.55/9.17 pulleys with ATI damper
- 160* thermostat
- ARH longtube header system w/ cats
- DMH electric cutouts
- Rotofab Cold Air Intake
- Nitrous Outlet spray bar system w/ 2 gallon dedicated – 150 shot
- MGW short throw shifter
- RPS triple disc billet carbon clutch
- Weld Racing/Vengeance Racing drag pack with 18” RTS S71B wheels

Lovely looking car! Cant wait to see it run up in Ocala, maybe we can have the two ZLs run together. I'm sure I'll get my *** handed to me as I'm only in the 600s as far as HP is, although I'm running 10.0s in the 1/4. Also cant wait to run a 1/2.

We look forward to seeing you there! We have another ZL1 coming with us as well that made 950/930 and ran a best of 9.60@141 his first time out with nitrous. He's caged and has a lot of weight pulled out versus this one being a full street car still. It should make for some very interesting runs!

We ran a best of 155mph on motor only at the Ocala 1/2 mile, but track conditions were horrible and we did not feel it was safe to dial in nitrous under those conditions. We will be at the GA WannaGOFAST event at the end of this month and shooting for high 150's on motor, and 170+ on nitrous.
Again, this was a shake-down day and the customers first time behind the wheel of the car. He's not a 1/4 mile guy and much prefers the 1/2, so this was not everything the car had in it. Also keep in mind that this is a FULL WEIGHT ZL1 tipping well over 4,000lbs on the scales.
