2010 Camaro SS... L99 vs LS3
I was reading the specs on the new 2010 Camaro and the 6 speed automatic comes out with the L99 6.2L engine with 400 hp. The 6 speed manual comes out the LS3 6.2L engine with 426 hp.
Both engines are 6.2L engines.
My question is, what is the difference between the L99 and LS3 engine?
Thanks

No the L99 is a 6.2L the L76 is the 6.0. I don't know all the details but the L99 is basiclly a LS3 with the AFM (active fuel management) which means that it has a special set of lifters that can be deactived to turn off a cylinder. The AFM lifters are limited in the amount of lift it can take and rpms it can handle so the L99 probably has a smaller lift cam and lower redline than the LS3.

The L99 also has variable valve timing to improve efficiency and performance. Basically the extra mass of the valvetrain requires a lower redline- i think 6000 for the L99 vs 6600 for the LS3 and I believe it has a slightly milder cam as well. The auto is geared more aggressively though to compensate for this and puts out pretty close performance numbers to the Manual car.

Not to mention that Comp Cams also has variable valve timing cams available already and I'm sure more will be out in the future as well. Although the auto seems like it's lacking stock, I think it will be a surprisingly strong performer and even more so when a nice cam is added or a nice stall. Heck, even a tune would wake it up with all that torque management GM likes to program in there. Either way, you can't go wrong!

I'd love to get my hand on an A6 and disable the the AFM, then add a cam and tune the VVT for max power across the board. Mast and Comp have both made HUGE gains using this new tech, so much so that mast is outfitting the LSX block w/ VVT.
