build, prevent, or buy
ok car has 115k (ls1 camaro) on it basic bolt ons, I could get a cam, timing chain, oil pump etc. to do preventative maintenance, or should i just let it go till it blows and get either a ls2 junkyard swap motor or buy like a rebuild kit. which would be the most cost effective wise and reliably wise? car is all ready fast enough for me I just would like to upgrade when I drop a lot of cash, and have time invested.
oh yeah wouldn't be building only have assembled a b18 honda motor with about 200 bucks, I don't trust myself with anything over a grand or 2 days+ worth of work

I don't think dropping thousands of dollars into a 100,000+ miles car is wise unless that car was babied with highway miles. The re-build is the eventual way to go if the car is in decent shape otherwise. Nothing like a fresh start.

Agreed.
115k is not an issue for a well maintained LS1. There are many members here that have done heads/cam swaps at 100-150k miles and continued to enjoy many thousands of additional miles without issues. And there are stock LS1s roaming the country with 200k+ miles and running well.
If you want to build it but are concerned that the short block might be the victim of previously poor maintenance, then you can perform some tests as a general evaluation; things like an oil analysis and compression test could be considered.

If something breaks it breaks, just get it fixed, rebuild's can be done for pretty reasonable prices with these motors. Plus, 115k miles isn't really too bad if it's been taken care of, I'd let the mods begin.

115k is nothing. buddy of mine had nearly 300K miles on a completely stock 99 ss before anything started to go wrong. I say slowly build a engine on the side. when its done swap it in. or else you will be waiting a long time for that engine to pop. hell mine has 165K and i'm planing a procharger build, given i will freshen it up a little, just for peace of mind.

115k is a baby - when mine with 230k bites it I will be looking for a 115k engine to install lol but that shouldnt be for a while.
condition is always way more important than miles , if the car is decent the motor will last , I would be more worried about 80k on a roach of a car personally
