Post 6-speed swap....yes or no?

Well, I've been thinking on swapping my car over to a T-56. I've had nothing but problems with my auto and I'm down to the point where I would just end up buying a built auto from a sponsor for around 1900-2000. I just was offered a full 6 speed swap (literally everything), for 1500. I could probably sell my FTI converter for 500-600 if I did this (practically new with warranty left). Oh and I have a mechanic friend that is more than capable of doing the swap that said he'd do it for lunch and a few rounds at the bar (talk about an awesome friend). So what do you guys think? Any input is appreciated. I did bracket race the car for a while and did quite well with it, but I'm to the point where I just want to drive the damn thing and not worry about problems.

I would go with a *quality* built auto from a shop like FLT. I was super happy with mine, only reason I don't still have it is because I sold the whole car. Using lesser quality, cheaper rebuilds or hoping that a stock GM 4L60E will hold up to big power and high rpms is going to be a losing battle.

If you want a 6-speed just because you want a 6-speed, then do the swap. But if you like the auto and are just frustrated with breakage, then you just need a properly built auto.

If your intent is to make huge power and race often, then even the best built auto will need to be freshened up once in a while. But the same can be said for clutch issues with an M6. There is no free ride if you want a serious horsepower machine. But at typical heads/cam level on a street car, you should have no problem getting an auto to hold up well if it's built right.

I'm not even going to bother with the 4L60 that came with my car, got a 4L80 to put in instead. Hopefully I'll have good luck with it

Derp. I've had an M6 and an A4 LS1 camaro and they're both fun. You make it sound like driving an A4 is some kind of self imposed torture.

For some people it is

Would you rather have a manual? I would do it in a heartbeat if I were in your shoes, but I can't stand autos. If you're racing the car a lot I would build up the T-56 before you put it in while it's out of the car, along with a new clutch and everything to go with it.

If you want a car that's just strictly ***** out fast and consistent in a straight line, invest in a good built Auto. If you're not really all about the straight line speed and you like to cruise around and have fun on the street mostly, do the T56.

The thing that would worry me about the 6 speed swap especially if your fed up with things breaking is the condition of all the 6 speed parts. At least with a built auto you know what your getting

I see you are from St. Louis. I live in the area as well. I can hook you up with my friend who has built a lot of 4L60s, and can literally talk your ear off about them. He knows his **** to say the least. His car has run a best of 10.5@127 on the 4L60, with hundreds of passes, both street and track, and his has held up just fine. There are a good amount of guys running around the STL area with trannies built by him and I've personally watched him build my friend's and he talked us through every stage of the build and what each part did. He also does it for a fair price. If you are interested, give me a PM and I'll send you his screenname on here, and you can check all his many posts about trannies on here, or phone number if you'd rather do that.

I have a built T56 for the street, and a MVB TH350/4500 Stall for the track..I switch them out when I race.

I was looking for an M6 car when i found my A4, So when the 4l60 took a dump twice it was a no brainer for me. Did the swap, loved it ever since not one problem with it since the swap other than needing a set of gears out back.

This. Do some reading on the Manual Transmission forum and you'll quickly realize that an M6 set up is not a solution for greater reliability.

There's a write-up on exactly how to do the swap, somewhere here in the forums. At first glance it just looks like a lot of drilling and stuff-the wiring part of it didn't seem like much to worry about.

I would do the swap because you want to drive a powerful car with a manual transmission, not for the sake of reliability because as it's been said the M6's have their issues also.

I personally want to do the same to my T/A. It'd be easier to find an M6 car and just go from there but I trust THIS car. Are you going to do the swap yourself or take it to a shop, 'OP?

its not torture, im just tired of dropping money on transmissions when my money could be going to making the car faster/better.

when i bought the car i had intensions of drag racing it, which i did.

now i want to enjoy the car on the street and carve corners.

I done several swaps, my A4 didn't hold up in my TA after the 408 even after stall and shift kit and light use. So it was best to go t56 since I drive it. Also for the $$ I spent on the swap + the hp it handles it was worth it.

NOW if my A4 goes on my 99 Formula, I'll go 6L80.
