Default Questions about a 4000 stall

Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a 2000 Z28 with a 4000 stall and a 9 inch with 4.11 gears in it. The car is H/C with a bunch of nice parts but I am concerned that it won't be streetable enough to be a daily driver.

I plan on driving the car every day and my commute is 60 miles round trip on the highway. Would the gears/stall eat me alive gas mileage wise? How will it drive in town and on the freeway?

Thanks!

Gas mileage during highway driving might not be too bad (not great, but not too bad) because the converter should lock up. However, if you are concerned about gas, you may want to pass on that car. Some people can deal with a set up like that, but some people can't. Do you know what cam is in it? If the guy had a good tuner, it will probably drive pretty good. If not, you aren't going to like it. The only way to tell is to go test drive it.

Lot's of people on here daily drive their cars with 3600+ stalls and many say that they're perfectly streetable, you're most likely going to take a hit on gas mileage (especially around town), but a lot of the way the car will run has to do with the tune. However, I agree with the guy above me, just go drive it and see how it is.

The stall wont be the problem if you are worried about the highway the 4.11 gear will I believe a 9" has 3.50 & 3.70 gear options available choose either and you will love it!!!

The stall isn't going to kill you on the highway, the 4.11 gears will. You'll be looking at 24-26ish mpg @65-70mph. I was getting 28-32mpg on the highway with a 4k stall and 3.23 gears.

Have fun in the city though. With that set up, you'll be looking at 10mpgs in the city. 4-6mpg if you get on it quite a bit.

A lock-up TC will not effect mileage at all on the highway, so you could even have a 4500+ stall and still get stock MPG on the expressway. But, the gears will cause a mileage reduction both in town AND on the highway.

I don't think it'll be THAT bad, unless the car is totally untuned and/or has a bad MAF/O2s. 10-13 on average in the city would be more likely, depending on gas type (E10 vs non-ethanol), seasonal blend, and weather conditions (lower in cold winter temps).

As long as you keep your right foot out of it you shouldn't have any problems. How well the car is tuned is what will determine how its gonna drive on the street. You alway can run a taller tire if you think its running too tall a gear. The car probally wont start to smooth out until about 55-60 mph.

I suppose if you were already planning to 'mod your future car then it was just a matter of time before you would have to deal with reliability and other DD issues.

But, if you're in no rush to 'mod I'd say try to find as close to stock a vehicle as you can, because your car will never be more reliable or easier to live with as a DD than when it's stock...

I am cammed and was running a vigilante 3200 stall and 3.73. I switched out my 3200 stall for a circle D 5C which is a 4000-4200 stall.. Flat out amazing!! It hit harder and pulls insane top end.

Drivability isnt even an issue. Your gas mileage will suffer though.

Really? I thought higher stalls could grate on your nerves around town?

I had a 3600 stall and 2.73 gears, saw gas mileage around town go down only 1-2 mpg with the stall. Big difference in performance. However, my father has a similar set up in his GTO (4K stall 4.10 gears) and its not a DD so gas mileage isnt a concern but on average he gets around 12-14 mpg. Also with those gears don't want to really cruise higher than 65-70 be revving real high

Most people won't be bothered by anything 3600rpm or less, as long as it's a quality converter. And many people are even fine with the 3600-4000 range stuff, after just a short while of driving it. Once you get over 4000 it's more likely that you'll find it bothersome driving around town, especially if you have a tall stock gear ratio.

IMO, a ~3500 stall feels stock in these cars after about a week of driving it.

I agree 100%. My daily is a 5.3 Silverado all stock and I can drive it all week then jump in the Chevelle on the weekend and not even notice around town unless I watch the tach like a hawk. I can drive everywhere in town and keep up with traffic at around 2k rpm.

On the other hand though, I don't think I would enjoy 4.11s with an automatic on the highway at all.

With my A4/Yank SS3600/4.56s',I get 21.5 mpg at freeway legal speeds,2500 rpm at 60 mph,3000 rpm at 72 mph. Have even taken 5 trips from Ohio to Florida with the 4.56s'.

Hmmm...Well, based on what everyone's saying I might have to think about a TC if my A4 ever gives out and I don't do the M6 swap...

I think that car is a bit much for a daily driver. You could do it but it would suck. You would be at like 3k rpm at 75 mph.... thats a tad much if u ask me.

I have a 3800 stall, 3.42's and a healthy cam. I also drive my car 65 miles a day, 80% highway and 20% city. I have a fairly good tune on the car and it is in good mechanical condition. With that said, I average bewteen 15-19 MPG all day, driving like an old lady. I get gas every 3 days or so and am buying a DD tomorrow...
