Default Where have all the timing gear sets gone?

Something's been bothering me for the last few years.

Back before the LS1, when you built a hot motor you had the choice of a double timing chain set or a timing gear set. A noisy timing gear set is one of my favorite sounds, but I haven't seen one for an LSx motor to date.

I tried searching the forum and I don't think there's any info out there, so I pose the question- What gives?

Why are there no timing gear options for these motors?

I'm old school, and back then, gear whine from a camchaft gear drive set was significant.
I believe 'knock sensors' can be 'set off' by the good sound of a camshaft gear drive set.

Mainly because gear drives are junk compared to a modern chain or wet belt setup. Also modern engines with knock sensors dont like gear drives. And with less and less people building old engines, the bottom felt out of The market for them.

They exist for the ls motors. But very few, and limited info and availabilty of them. There is pics of them here on someones build. But no one really uses em, I dont see any advantages using them over an adjustable double roller

The only advantage I see is better timing accuracy without the slop in the chain...oh wait, that's what the cam and crank sensors are for...lol.

Interesting info guys. Guess if I want the sound of a noisy timing gear, I'll just have to buy a Maggie...
