Will it hurt the car to drive it at really low RPMs?
I have a 2000 Camaro SS six speed and I have acquired a habit to shift at 1k RPM and quickly shift it to high gear .. So the car doesn't really run ever above 1300k rpm and I only drive city..The car sometimes feels like its about to stall but it has a lot of torque so it doesn't ever stall.. Am I harming anything? Once in awhile when I'm in the mood to drive spiritedly, I'll shift at 4k and such, but I don't do that often because I live in the city and don't drive too far

I wouldn't think anything would be harmed. Your actually saving your motor by not redlining it every single time you drive it. And that also saves a lot of gas so you should be cranking out some decent mpg's

Why are you not riding it to a higher RPM? To save gas? You might be doing the opposite, because in such low RPMs you're so low on power that you're probably heavier on the gas pedal, which is dumping more fuel...

there's a lot of mixed responses.. haha this is confusing. And how is lugging in 6th gear bad? by lugging, do you mean the jerking motion where the car is about to stall?

Haha yeah i drive like this sometimes, other times i'm flooring it at every light. I think as long as it isn't bogging down (easy enough to tell) then its fine. When you drive around 1k gas is pretty dang good, i used to do it a lot.

I've heard running a engine at too low of RPM's will burn out the rings. And 1k shifts? O.o I thought I drove my car too low. Most videos I see is people shifting the m6 at 2500. I drive at around 1500-2k usually. Gets 26mpg 80% highway 20%city.
Edit:
I drive my car up and down highway hills in 6th at 52-55 mph and usually only turns 1100 RPM's rarely does it see 1500 RPM's in 6th because Ohio doesn't really have 65 MPH highways. at least not in this part of it.

it really depends on how much load is being put on the engine at that low rpm. yes it can cause problems but once your at speed and just cruising it fine to run around like that. just as long as your not shifting at 1300rpm and going full throttle to 1300rpm and then doing it over again like that.

I loathe when people say lugging will hurt your car. IT WILL NOT, if your bucking a lot then yes it could wear the trans a little i guess. It will hurt your gas mileage to lug though but its your car drive it however you want, i guarentee you wont blow your engine from cruising at 800 rpms.

Just make sure I'm not behind you when you do your granny driving. Its bad enough getting behind one of thoses Smart Cars on the on ramps. I actually like to get my motor up to operating temp before I cut it off.

yea, i agree with the others who say that it does use a little more fuel, since you are probly lugging it without really knowing......i usually shift to second at like 1200 rpms, then all the other gears wait til like 1500 to ****......keeping it above 1200....i do a lot of town driving/barely highway, and some 55 mph roads, and see about 23 mpg.
lol and i know i said ****, but rather than fixing it ill leave it lol

Because, how is that even possible? I do understand the fact that it's not the best for gas mileage, but if lugging it along at 800 RPM's for a little while is going to hurt the motor, I guess just letting the car idle is especially bad for it too right?

Idle is a totally different situation than when under load. Correct me if I'm wrong but when "lugging it" the throttle is opened, the fuel injector pulse width is super long (dumping fuel), and timing is greatly advanced. That may mean higher combustion temps and more carbon deposits. Soo i think 1000 rpm is fine for cruising but can't be good in the long run for accelerating or going up hill. Think about how auto's are programmed.
Lets say your trying to get better mpg. Say your fuel injector pulse width under load (accel or uphill) is .03s at 1000rpm. Now if u held it in a lower gear for longer under load, say your pulse width is .01s at 2000rpm, your engine is injecting fuel 2x as often but only 1/3 of the amount each time. Overall you could be using less fuel at a higher rpm.
(That was just an example, results may vary)

If you seriously want gas mileage numbers. Avoid different gears and came. Go with full bolt ons and a tune. Then you'll have a respectable amount of power. And shift at 2k like the rest of us. To be honest your screwing up your clutches shifting at 1000... my car idles at 850 I don't even know how your shifting at that low.
