Is it safe just to lift the shortblock from the head bolt holes onto the engine stand?

I did it...no problems. I just used the old head bolts to attach the chains. However, It can dig into the surface, mine got a full treatment at the machine shop so I wasent worried about it.

I wouldn't do it on an aluminum block, but it "can" be done.

Just get one of these and call it a day.

I don't really want to spend 50 bucks on the valley cover tool. The engines out just sitting on the k member. I don't want to risk dropping it so lifting by hand is not an option. I guess head bolt holes it is.
