Default T-Tops vs Hardtop Weight?

Hey everyone!

On the 4th gen F bodies how drastic is the difference in weight with a car having T Tops or a Hardtop?

My friend is saying that the T Tops require more frame reinforcement so thus they are MUCH heavier... any thoughts?

In the end I dont care, I will stick with T-Tops, They practically define these cars to me!

I read this before I don't remember exactly. Sorry. But the weight difference is seriously whatever the holders in your trunk weigh. (Under 5 pounds) and the difference between a fiberglass roof compared to our glass roof (also very minor. Maybe 10 pounds) there is no suspension modifications which might be what your friend is thinking considering convertibles have suspension mods to support the body change. Hope I was able to help.

There's maybe a few pounds in weight difference between the two if any at all, the roofs are made the same on hardtop cars as they are on T-top cars. If you drop the headliner on a hardtop, you can literally see how T-Top's are designed to go in those spots.

For 4th gen Fbodies the ttop cars have no added structural reinforcement over the hardtop cars. These chassis were supposedly built as convertibles from the factory.
weight seems to vary too much between years and options for a real comparison:

Hardtops however do have sheet metal bracing connecting the A pillar to the B pillar on the roof unlike t tops which have nothing there when the t tops are off...

I find it kind of funny ,you're all saying t-tops and hardtops and not one of you quoted weights of your cars ,I have a hardtop and it weights in at 3200 lbs at my digital scale at the track ,with a few pounds removed like front swaybar and spare tire thats about it ,so what does your t-top car weight exactly ,any numbers ?

32xx is light. I haven't got mine on a scale to be honest. But I have full options so it would weigh probably 3400. 100 pounds is like 10 horsepower at the crank. Hardly worth considering when t tops looks amazing. And are awesome when its hot out.

My old TTOP Trans Am weighed 3020# with some weight taken out.

Absolute stupid to even consider this a comparison.

With spare tire in my car and 1/4 tank of gas my car weighed 3,440 lbs, nothing extra in it besides the jack and a few CD's. My car has T-tops also.

My car is hard top with manual everything, I thought it would be light, but I was wrong. It has 17' vette wheels, a 9" ford and nothing taken out except spare and jack. With 3/4 tank gas it weighed 3500.

My T-top fully optioned 02 SS weighed 3450 with a 1/4 tank of gas. Spare tire was removed but has a 24lb nitrous bottle in its place. And maybe my dual exhaust weighs more than the factory exhaust does...IDK.

Either way this should be fairly close to what you are wanting to know
