Hell I say do it. People have put diesels in cars. They pop up once in a while here on craigslist. I think it would be really cool....and expensive. I guess everything would have to be custom. I've never seen it. Be the first.

There is a guy on stevesnovasite.com that turbo'd his 250 six cylinder. In the end it cost him a lot more than a V8 of similar power because everything had to be custom made (engine internals, cam, intake, exhaust, etc.). But it was cool and unique.

FWIR, It won't fit. The heads are massive and they won't clear the shock towers.

That 496 is the best factory BB Chevrolet ever built. New tooling. DART has killer heads for it and a siameased bore block if your inclined. The head bolt locations are different and way better than the original layout. It also has symmetrical intake ports that should have been done 35 years ago. You will need a custom intake. $$ and no one makes headers for it. If your a car builder with any skills, go for it. I'd call DART for a cam recommendation. Be different, you won't regret it.

Everyone makes headers for this engine, the exhaust ports are the same as a standard BBC.

Actually I have two of these motors. one in a 27' welcraft, and another in a 2004 chevy 2500hd with the Allison trans. I've had Raylar performance send me out a rebuild kit. I'm running about 600 whp in a truck half covered in iron and the other half bed liner. I have lots of fun. I would love to get an old catalina or something and drop the 8.1 and the Allison in it. It's an absolute beast. I love passing diesel boys and driving through their black smoke cloud with a trailer on.

Don't know why my posts weren't showing up before on this thread - we've never done an F-body, but Larry has a 496 with aluminum heads, 205 cam and headers in his C5 Vette. It's a lot of fun to run down the new 458 Ferraris at 3/4 throttle...

I am currently in the process of turning a 79 base T-Top Firebird into a 78 Trans Am Clone and have an 8.1L from a 2004 2500HD and a 4L85E from a 3500 van to put in it. I am currently stripping down the body to send off to paint. Raylar has some good information on their website and I hope to be able to get some of their goodies in the future.

I will hopefully have mine installed in a few months. The car is still at the body shop and I should have the 8.1 back from a buddy of mine that just went through it top to bottom and installed the Raylar cam and roller rocker kit. I also picked up an oil pan from stephs and switched to a T56. I am hoping for an almost bolt in install with some possible tunnel work to make the transmission fit.

Looking good MannyMaro!

Not F bodies, but just for chuckles / information, here are some of our newer 8.1L videos:

That last one is an 8.1L powered holden ute during a burnout competition in Perth, AUS.

sure stop n go traffic it feels that way. 6.0s run out of breath long before the 8.1 will. Towing comparisons prove that one
