LSx tranny combo for best mpg?
I have been contemplating an LSx swap into my 1st gen 4runner and was wondering what would be the absolute most efficient LSx setup (stock setups are what I'm looking for). I'm not looking to highly modify the engine as I'll have my hands full stuffing it into the engine bay.
Rear gear sets aren't important in my setup as I have many options, but engine model/gen and tranny combo.

T-56 no doubt. Thats one of the best parts of these transmissions, specially for those people that need to save gas. (who doesnt now days ) As far as engine goes it depends if all you want is a gas saver or if you also want some HP. You cant go wrong with a LS1, 4.8 or a 5.3.

I'm probably looking between 250-300hp.
My other current engine option is the 1UZ (please keep the conversation civil).
The 4runner will be used for an all around rig. It won't see DD type of stuff because I do have a car for that, however it will see long trips and will tow a small camper or boat at times too. It will do offroad activity (rock crawling etc...) as well. It is an all around rig and I don't want to look at it after doing the swap and say to myself, "I don't want to do drive it because it gets 13 mpg". I'm doing a swap regardless, so I want one that will be efficient. I'm not doing a swap to increase my current mileage as that would be ridiculous to do a swap solely on that. The 22r is just too underpowered for anything but creeping around with dual cases.

I'll be researching and hopefully will post up some weight and size numbers along with possibly some expected mpg numbers. Did you have any particular version of the 5.3 in mind for the optimal choice?

Here a setup with the more economic 5300 option (aside from the Gen IV).
