Default Exhaust question

I currently have a flowmaster cat back exhaust on my '02 Z28...I have plans this winter for headers and an ory.....I have heard the flowmasters are restrictive but last night I had a guy tell me he had a car with flowmaster exhaust that dynoed 30 some rwhp more when he opened the cut outs!! Are they that restrictive?! I thought about keeping my flowmaster I have now and just connecting it to the ory. Thoughts? If not I want a magnaflow. Does anyone know if the replacement magnaflow muffler is the same as the one in the whole cat back system? Would havering a local muffler shop install the muffler be ok? Sorry for the long post....I'm a newbie here....

Ditch the Flowmaster. I'm very happy with my Magnaflow. The difference in hp gains is not very significant between cat-backs most of the time but I guess every little bit counts. I'd base it on sound though.

Magnaflow is good, so is Texas Speed Performance Rumbler catback system if wanna save some money. If want loud, go with SLP LM1 or little quieter SLP LM2. Check out www.ls1sounds.com

flowmaster seems to be a pretty restrictive exhaust compared to other exhausts. Youre not seeing a 30rwhp in a stock car though. It mustve been running a lot of power for cutouts to make that much of a difference if its really true. Im getting flowmasters but im gonna be running true duals, so i think that should even up a bit.

He said he was making 4xx through the muffler and picked up 30 more with the cut out open....

You could leave the FM and see how you like the sound. If you're happy with it, call it good.

If you're going for every last hp, then replace the muffler with a Magnaflow. A friend did it when his FM fell apart inside, and it sounds great with his ORY. The Magnaflow tailpipe openings are 2.5" and the FM pipes are 3", but a good exhaust shop will weld them up just fine.

I'm going the route of Hooker maxflows which seem to be tested at quite but most loudest db rating at wot compared to many others. Also one of the best flowing mufflers and ones to lose the lesser amount of hp. Will be perfect and if not loud enough then cutouts will help do the job.

I like the sound of the flowmasters so I may leave them.....how hard will it be to connect the current pipe to the ory? Will I have to have it welded on?

No it will either slip fit or can be butt-connected with a band clamp.
