Default Baby cam opinions/success/failure stories?

In the classifieds there is a very very complete cam package for sale for a pretty damn good price. It's a TSP 220/220 .564/.564 114lsa.

Done some research and theres not a lot of cam only dyno numbers and 1/4 mile times. Most are already paired with heads. Theres a lot of positive feedback and it seems to be one of the more respected baby cams but the friends I've talked to about it and my mechanic say its not worth tearing into the motor for such a mild cam. I'd just like peoples opinions on this cam and would like to know whats the maximum whp/wtq and ET I could get from this set up cam only+ the mods in my sig with a good tune?

Would the cam match up well with 3.90 gears?

How would it work in a turbo application? Curious because its a very possible route I may take in the future but not a for sure thing.

Maximum hp/et when paired with some 243/799 heads?

Car is currently my DD for the next year or so. I always planned to go with something bigger especially being an M6 but this deal is tempting as hell and I really want to jump on it. But I'd like to know what you guys think. How much power/et could I gain out of it? What are your experiences with small cams? Thanks

I run the GMPP hotcam in mine which is considered to be very small by today's standards, but I picked it up for a very cheap price. So I tossed it in and have been running it with stock 853 heads for about a year and a half now. It added some good sotp power to the car with a tune and the other mods in my sig. I will eventually be going larger down the road when I decide to upgrade the heads but for now it makes the car more fun to drive.

Your car sounds awesome. What are the specs on your cam? Any dyno/track numbers?

Thanks The cam specs are 218/227 .525"/.525" I haven't had the chance to run it at the track yet or get it on the dyno since I never stop working on it and making changes, haha. I am in the middle of swapping it from A4 to M6 at the moment.

well i put in a baby cam and was disappointed. if your doing all the work of adding new springs you may as well put in a decent cam. the min should be the tr224. another poster mentioned a cam 228/ 230? w 573 lift 112 lsa which sounded like a good choice. (not for A4 w stock stall). cheers. just my one cent.

I run a EPS 218/222 114lsa with .595 lift and stock ls2 heads in a ls1 m6 commodore ute. Went small cause its a daily driver live inner city and have to deal with a lot of stop start traffic. The ute is like a gto, heavy pig so wanted heaps of torque down low. I love it, great manners, better than stock fuel economy and instant power from 1200rpm and hangs on till 6500. Made about 370rwhp on a modest dyno with a slipping clutch and small headers, havent run it at the track but plan to soon.

That will work well with a turbo with it having the milder Comp XE cam lobes and the 114lsa, and it'll have a fairly smooth idle with it having -8* of overlap. It will also be very DD friendly, and will still be a nice step up from the stock or Z06 cam, and with the 3.90 gears it'll be even better!

FYI, if you want a clearly noticeable cam lope then don't get this cam.

Definitely a stealth cam which would love a turbo later. You can expect about 25 rwhp over the stock cam and at least another 20 or so if you swap some 243/799s. I run an EPS 218/226 and am very happy w/it. I wanted it to sound stock and my mileage w/M6 tranny always exceeds 30 mpg freeway

Thanks for all the input guys. So could I realistically make 380whp cam only with this cam and a good tune? 400whp if I throw some stock unported 243s in? Unknown hp right now but my car made 350wtq with mods in sig so Im guessing hp is in the same area.

I've always wanted something that idled at least a little lopey and mean sounding and could bang out 400whp cam only, but for the price and future turbo possibility I'm tempted to take this one. I just can't decide. Obviously I'm scared to get it and end up wanting more. Its really just the low price, completeness of the kit, and my broke *** college kid budget that is making me really want it.

My last car was a hotcam LT1, current car is a TR224 LS1. In both cases I wish I had went larger. I will be taking the TR224 out and replacing with with a V2 or something similar at some point. For now I am trying to do all the other things.

It really comes down to what you want. Do you want a baby cam or does your budget want a baby cam. In many cases the baby cam isnt that much cheaper.

Its definitely my budget that wants it lol. Its hard to beat $450obo for cam, springs, retainers/locks, pushrods, gaskets, and even some NGK plugs. Only thing I'd still need is a timing chain and tune.

I ran the gm hotcam in my lt1 cars, its a pretty small cam but it definitely made a difference in power. Im sure a bigger cam would've been better but its what I had at the time so I used it. Personally I think a little bit bigger cam would be more fun and give you results you'd be happier with.

Yeah the guy hasn't responded to my PM and is slow to reply on the ad so not someone I really want to deal with anyways. Maybe just a sign that I should go with something bigger lol.

I think that's the best baby cam ever. Sounds neatly stock too.

I'd actually like some lope lol. Heard a vid of the 220/220 I made this thread about and it sounds bigger than it is. On video at least. Those are sick numbers for such a small cam though. I think EPS is the king of little cams.
