I saved some notes on this when I had a 4L60E built for my old WS6. Here was the explanation given to me at that time, as to why the 4-2 wasn't "bad" as some seem to think:
"A 4-2 is easier than 4-3-2 because with a manual 4-3 shift, then auto 3-2 shift the band must release for 3rd and the overrun clutch apply, then the 3-4 clutch must release for 2nd, then the band must reapply for 2nd. However the auto 4-2 does not require the band release or the overrun clutch, only the 3-4 clutch release (multiple events vs one)."
Whether or not this is easier on the trans is another matter for debate. Not all builders agree. In 3rd, the overrun clutch is also engaged and this has been known to decrease line pressure at the 2-3 shift point, thus in time can contribute to 3-4 clutch failure.

My stock 4L60E is up to 103k miles now... only changed the fluid a couple times since I've owned it. I've daily driven it, drag raced it every other Friday night, autocrossed it, did god knows how many burnouts and donuts. Still not missing a beat. Now I've got 400whp and 6900 rpm shift points and I'm sure it won't be happy much longer. It's been very good to me so far.

This car was a basic bolt-on setup (lid/exhaust). As stated earlier, it saw plenty of WOT action.
I'd agree with the built 4L60E, but not the 4L80E unless you're planning on a major power increase. 4L80E will sap more power and require some modifications to fit, and it isn't necessary for a bolt-on or even mild heads/cam car - especially now that many auto trans builders have gotten very good with the 4L60E.

Biggest killer of any auto trans is +50mph wot downshifts. The engine revs sky high and it slams back into 1 or 2 depending on the rear gears at full power. It can break lots and lots inside that tin can.
