IMO: Every year LS7 has had issues. `06-`12 it was valves and in `13 it's the connecting rods. Sorry there's just too many reports of Z06 and 427s' LS7 going **** up especially considering the lower volume vs. the LS2 and LS3 cars. If you're going to cam it at the first chance then have the heads redone and all is probably good. If it's a `13 then put 5-10K miles on it first, have an oil analyses done, then do as previously stated.
Another option, especially if you're thinking of forced induction, is the GS. Manual coupe GS have the Z06's hardware, plus a removable roof but at a increased weight (steel frame). The A6 and convertible are available if you wish, minus the dry sump oiling. Either way the LS3 is rock solid and many say better for forced feeding.
Either way the C6 are light years ahead of the F-bodies in refinement and I agree go C6 over CTS-V since it's a toy.

^^This. A friend of mine with a C6Z went from a few bolt-on's then added a centi blower and cam. Only pushing 5 or 6psi at ~650whp, it lasted just a few thousand miles before the motor grenaded. Needless to say after the blower went on he was expecting it and knew it was only a matter of time.

Well to be honest , I didnt want to over do it like I did with my camaro. Monster clutch is pain to push in traffic. I was thinking lightly mod it for now, maybe longtubes, intake and tune. Then add a cam and do the heads. I love FI but its easy to go overboard. If I build a motor than can make 700-800rwhp theirs no way I m driving it at 500 rwhp. That's why I m a little hesitant to do a gs and fi. You guys are starting to persuade me though. What are the big differences between a GS and Z besides the ls7?

I am in the same boat you are in now. My mechanic said if I am going to do a heads and cam car go with the Z. If you are going with FI then go with the GS. So I am going with the Z. The heads are something to look out for like others have said, but if you are going to do the heads. Go with the Z.

Differences:
Z06 has aluminum frame
Z06 slightly lighter weight (roughly 100 lbs)
Slightly different spring rates and shocks (GS between the Z06 and Z51)
GS has removable top (Z06 does not. From experience, removable top is done deal for me, just love it on nice days)
Transmission gearing (GS has better gearing IMO)
Z06 has 30 spline output shaft in lieu of the 27 spline (not really a big deal unless going big power and/or sticky tires for drag racing)
Z06 has carbon fiber front fenders in lieu of the fiberglass
Z06 has an upgrade differential (again, not really a big deal unless going big power and/or sticky tires for drag racing)
Z06 has magnesium engine cradle in lieu of aluminum

I actually started looking. The gs are the same price as the z06 lol. If I can find a low mileage gs in the the mid 30s I would definitely jump on it. If not I ll probably go with the z. GS would be cheaper to insure which would be nice. I like Targa tops but I almost never pull the t tops off so that doesn't matter a whole lot

Well started looking at blowers. If I can find a deal on a GS I might go that route and top it off with an a&a supercharger kit. For some reason I can't get over the ls7. Just so big and badass. Buying a Z seems like I m buying a super car vs building a super car. Plus insurance in more on the gs bc its newer (weird)

Damn I didn't know the ls7 had so many issues especially on the FI side of things. Other than that I agree OP theres just something about knowing you have all those cubic inches under your right foot. In my opinion I would only go with GS if you were sure about going FI. Either way Congrats on the upgrade!

yea I would love a z06! blew my mind when I drove it. Just don't want to blow up a 13k motor lol. hopefully most of the bad is just blown out of proportion

Its a black base coupe. Bone stock with 35k and naturally a 6spd. Picked it up for 28,700$. I blacked out the wheels. A little plain looking for my taste but I ll fix that with some wheels and wide body fenders. Once I hop in it and go I forget about all that though lol. Car freaking handles!
