Default hotcam experts please?

I want to order a hotcam 218/227 112lsa with some ls6 springs. Seems like a mild cam...affordable...
Does anyone know if I can use the same pushrods or do I need a different length?

You can use the same pushrods but that cam will leave a lot to be desired. There's a lot of better cams out there.

There is definitely a noticeable difference in power and if you do the research you will find dyno and track evidence to prove this.

Depending on your goals, there may not be very many "better" cams. The Hotcam (or a similar custom grind) is very easy on valve train components (specifically springs) and can be tossed in with stock LS6 springs and forgotten about for ~100k miles. Cams with more aggressive lobes will require attention to spring life/more frequent spring replacement, and/or use of springs that may cause lifter concerns over the longer term.

If the goal is max effort power, then yes I agree that the Hotcam is nowhere near the top of the list. But this is not the goal for everyone, which is why a more dynamic understanding of someone's goals is necessary before making a cam recommendation.

I appreciate the description, I'm not looking for huge power anytime soon.
How about this package above? ^

I understand everybody wants different things for their car. I didnt make a reccomendation, I just put out there people thought they were going to be better power out of cam swap than they got with Hotcam. When spending the money for parts/labor you like to get what expecting. So more advise/homework could make a difference. Thats all.

True, I've done my homework on this cam, just getting it all figured out before I dig into it. I don't want to get caught up on my first swap

Just put a hot cam in my friends ls1 in a 3rd gen. I used yellow ls6 springs and stock push rods out of my ls2.

Cant wait to see how the car runs, only have $200 into the cam swap.

Classifieds on here. On detroit craigslist theres an asa cam for $225 I thought about picking up just to have around.

Its seems to be pretty rare for the hot cam or asa cam to come for sale.

One thing I would recommend if your doing the swap your self, is pick up 16 little pen magnets to help hold the lifters up. On my friends 98 ls1 half the lifters fell out of the trays. Had to pull the heads and oil pan ect. No big deal because it was on a stand but would suck if it was in the car.

I agree, but your comment, "People say they didnt notice much difference in power", is a bit misleading. There is a definite difference in power (measureable and proven, also dependent on supporting modifications), but perhaps for some individuals the difference wasn't enough or wasn't what they were expecting. Those people likely didn't do proper research themselves, and thus their opinions become misleading as well.

I'd say to focus your research on actual track and dyno improvements seen with various before-and-after testing, paying close attention to other supporting details of the various setups and how they compare to yours, and ignore what people think they "feel" since this varies greatly depending on personal perception and preconceived expectations.

I used stock pushrods for my hot cam and don't have any problems. The car runs very good 😎

I was thinking of just getting some long dowel pins to stick in there to hold lifters in the tray?

Ya that would also work, just dont rely on them staying in the trays.

I did the cam swap in my ls2 a month or so prior to the hot cam install in my buddys car and the lifters stayed in the trays on that one.

Wow. I haven't heard anyone mention the "hot cam" since a T/A was in that Bullrun event all those years ago...
