It sucks. I bought one that had a "valve tick". 4 broken pistons, both heads cracked, and .080 worth of material lost to corrosion on one side of the block. There should be a bounty on wrecking yard owners. $25 for both ears with the skin left between them.
I have a small bridge outside of town I'd like to show you....................

Personally, if I buy an engine off of someone here or craigslist, I anticipate it needing a rebuild.
The damage in the pics don't look too bad. If the seller doesn't take the engine back, you can have the crank ground .010" and new bearings, but that's certainly an unplanned expense and hopefully the seller makes it right.
