I think the 317 heads were only used on LQ4 and LQ9 motors. Some where on the front or back there should be "6.0L" cast in to it.

Thank you. To be more specific, I'm trying to find out the year. Good rods and floating wristpins vs pressed pins, etc. Also, where would I find the entire VIN. Dealing with a shady junkyard and want to verify mileage and donor vehicle.

I don't think they ever stamped the VIN into the motor. Is it DBW or DBC? 317 heads means it's no older than 2000. 1999 was the last year for the iron headed LQ4 (that is what i have)

Look on the pass side front deck just behind water pump.

The date code is in cast there.

Pull a spark plug and try to examine one of the pistons at TDC. It's likely an LQ4 as the LQ9 fetches a premium.

Not that I know of. Could be production or plant information but nothing relative to Id'ing the engine.

You rock!

Would this have the stronger rods and floating wrist pins?
Do the other numbers etched on the head mean anything?

No on the stronger rods.

The the numbers don't corespond to anything that I have found.

Many Thanks! I owe you a beer

So an 03 LQ4 317 heads and unknown mileage worth?? They're asking $1200 for it.

If it comes with absolutely everything, $1200 is in the ballpark of what they normally go for.

Unless you plan on adding lots of boost, the floating pin rods aren't necessary.

At what point is lots of boost? Isn't it relative? Meaning, if my HP/ET goals are met with only 16#'s, that's relatively moderate boost. FWIW, I don't plan on running more than 22#'s and really shouldn't have to on a 6.0 with twin S366's, custom cam, etc.

BTW, I decided to go with another 6.0. This one was too sketchy, dirty, mileage unknown, and looked like it was pulled out by a monkey.
