Default Dyno tune on a bolt-on LS1

My '01 Z28 has JBA Shorty Headers, SLP LM1 catback and a K&N FIPK and the LS6 intake manifold (factory modification). The cost of a dyno tune could range around $350-$600 from what I've been told. Would I gain any real power from a dyno tune with these current mods? Do you guys think it would be worth it?

I have shorties because of California's emission laws

The LS6 intake isn't a factory modification, it was basic stock equipment on all 2001+ LS1s and LS6s and included in the factory tune for those model years.

I agree with the above, if you had long tubes you'd be looking at a nice gain from a dyno tune. A stock car (or one with shorties) can certainly gain some power from a custom dyno tune, though I wouldn't expect anything dramatic. IMO, this would only be worth it now if you don't plan on any future modifications and you want every last bit of power out of the current setup.

Yeah I don't think I'll be doing any crazy modifications since this car is my daily. I just want to be able to reach or get as close as I can to 400 crank hp with the mods that I currently have

You would gain from a dyno tune, just won't be as much as if you had more/better mods.

And just curious, did you replace the stock intake manifold with a LS6 intake?

On an '01 car, I sure hope not!

Wait until you have more bolt ons to make it worth it, underdrive pulley, SSRA, TB and intake mani swaps, electric water pump, A/C delete, free ram air mod, theres plenty of them out there and when dyno tuned all together they will benefit more.

RPM WS6 hit the nail on the head.

You could also look into getting a basic tune instead of a dyno if you're trying to save some cash, maybe get your throttle body ported and polished with what you saved.

Luckily my car came with an LS6 intake manifold since it's an '01

Wait do you mean one of those mail order tunes? And I guess I could contact the local shop about the throttle body porting since I don't have the necessary equipment to perform the task at home. And how much would the TB be enlarged by? I know the stock size is 78mm, but what are the limits to how wide you can port it?

That's an option, a lot of people on here are running frost tunes, but I had mine done by a local tuner, only cost me around $200.

I could be wrong, but I think its ~85mm or so

Frost tunes seem great, but if I mail in my PCM I won't be able to drive my car in that time period! And since this is my daily it would be an inconvenience

You could buy a spare PCM and have it tuned then swapped when you get it. That's what I had to do.

That's good, I didn't know exactly what you meant in your original post. I was hoping you didn't. I've seen people try to sell/trick others into buying "LS6" throttle bodies as a mod to replace stock "LS1" throttle bodies. Same damn thing with different stickers. Same thing happens with '01+ intakes.

Stuff like that is the reason why I do research before every decision I make for the car! Maybe a PSA sticky post in the newbie section would help prevent people for falling in the trap.

^ I haven't personally heard of people being fooled into thinking their '01+ LS1s don't already have an LS6 intake, but I have heard of some unscrupulous folks trying to sell 2000-and-earlier C5 intakes as LS6 pieces (since they also don't have an EGR.) The differences are easy to spot visually, as long as you do some basic research.
