Default Whats this sound?

Well, It started a few days ago, its coming from the back end of the car.
It starts at around 25mph and sounds like something rubbing together.
The sound goes in rhythm with my speed. Almost a washing machine sound.
Its hard to explain.
It sounds like my rearend, but Ive never heard a noise like this before...

What do you guys think?

JD

It could be a heat shield vibrating on the floorboard. There are several throughout the underside of the car.

You might also want to check your spare. I could be loose and vibrating against the body of the car.

no, its not a vibration sound, its more of a friction sound, something thats spinning.
I just jacked up the rear and put it in drive, and I still can't pinpoint where its coming from.
Its gotta be either the brakes, or the rearend/axle.
Could something need to be lubed?

Your diff may need topped off or just flushed and refilled.

Could be:

-U Joint
-bearings going out in rear
-Brake pads needs to be replaced(rubbing wear sensor)
-Tires are to wide and is rubbing in the inner fender
-Something is caught in your brake system

Also I would take the rear end cover off and rotate the tires by hand do see what exactly is going on in there.

well, I just recently had all the bearings replaced in the rearend, so the fluid should be good, and I know what a bad bearing in the rear sounds like.

Im thinking either Ujoint or the brake pads.
Im going to do the brakes soon, so i guess ill find out.

Thanks for the help guys

Ok I just did something that threw me off a little.
I put the car in reverse and got up to around 25mph, and it didn't make the noise?

I am still kind of hoping its the brakes, so does anyone know how the thing works, that is makes some sort of noise when your pads a worn?

Is there any "twang" to the sound?
Especially at lower speeds?

I had a similar sound once. It turned out to be the rust on the edge of the rotor rubbing against the shiny metal clip that the pads ride on. It twanged if moving slowly and kinda howled at highway speeds. I scraped off some of the rust around the edge of the rotor and that lessened it (I should have done more). New rotors took care of it (the old ones were warped anyway).

Sounds like your pads may be shot. Definately check it.

yes, they are designed to squeel even without the brakes to notify you they are low.

Change out the rear pads and rotors and go from there.

A bad U-Joint will make a squealing sound. Plus the vibration will get worse rather quickly.

I noticed when I put the car in neutral while moving (around 45) it vibrates for a second, and kind of goes away.

Its not a squeal either, more like a faint clunk clunk clunk, that gets faster and faster.

If its the ujoint, the driveshaft will wobble if i tug on it right?

U-joint didn't wobble.
This is really bugging me, I put it up on jackstands again, and I can hear the noise plain as day, I just can't pinpoint where its coming from..
