6 qts stock filter 6.5 or so with a longer one. You have a lot of room in the oil-pan and it wont hit the crank with even 7qts. Also, you have to take into account .5-1qt will NOT be in the pan even with the engine just idling.

Owner's manual says 5.5 quarts, but I usually run more like 5.75-6.0.

5.5 but 6 qts is fine. I have had an LS1 since March of 98. Actually 2 different ones, and they have had 6 qts in them at almost every oil change. It won't hurt a thing.

5.5 quarts shows up to the full mark on my dipstick. I wouldn't put any more than that in the engine unless you're running a longer oil filter or deep oil pan.

If you can, put in stock Filter(AC Delco PF46) and 5.5 qts of oil.

If you put over 5.5 qts of oil in a stock filter size you will create windage and will make the characteristics of the oil change because of how your crankshaft(oil slapping your crank from being to full) will "aeroate"(sp?) and will basically cause your oil pressure to drop and/or oil to start foaming up.

Un-true. The oil level in the pan even at 7qts is below the crank.

You can do what you want, 5.5 is what the manufacturer suggests for a stock oil pan, and also I used to use 6 qts. then I had fluctuating oil pressure(most likely due to windage) I have stopped doing that, and just using the recommended 5.5 qts and it does not do it anymore..

If you use more than necessary, that's just more oil that your motor has to push around. If there isn't room for that extra oil, then you've got problems like SHINER mentioned.

i used to put 6 then i would get the oil pressure jumping around. then a shop told me to use 5 so the crank isnt soaking in it, so i put 5.5 in and the oil preasure stays steady now!!!

5.5 for me.

It's what my manual and this forum recommended so that's what I do. No issues.

True dat. Causes loss in power too. Read a write-up in a magazine about it. (aerate)

I gained a noticeable amount of oil pressure on the car's gauge using a stock-sized K&N going from 5.5 quarts (like the manual says) in my first and second changes to 5 quarts in my third. Now I run 5 quarts and drive it like I stole it. Also, it doesnt use any oil like it did when I used 5.5 quarts. Always stays right dead center in the range on the stick for all 3,000 miles.

yeah def need patmans input! I always use roughly 5.5-5.75 qt/change and it doesnt always use exactly the same. lol since my changes in the TA are rare, I take my EXTREME time, let it drain for 2 hrs, slap on a filter(pre-filled with oil), and then add in the full 5 qts(incl the bit put into the filter). At this point I lower the car onto the level garage floor and fill it to the full mark adding/checkin with every 100 ml after that initial 5 qt, lol a 15 min process lengthened out to 3 hrs! not to mention a few beers have to suffer!

I thought oil pressure fluctuation(on the gauge) was normal?

Does the block retain any oil within the veins or any part? Or no matter what, it all drains to the bottom and it just depends on how long you let her drain?.
