Route 66 has anyone ever travelled this road? like, made a road trip out of it? i was talking to an older guy the other day and he was telling me that he took it all the way out to Vegas after he graduated high school and it was the most fun thing he ever did. he said you meet some really interesting people and see a lot of really awesome places. i thought i might do it one day. but can anyone else tell of their experience?

Most of it's gone now - replaced by interstate. Used to be cool, there even was a TV show "Route 66" with a couple guys traveling it in a Corvette. Did it with my dad driving from Chicago to San Francisco - in a '55 DeSoto...many, many, many years ago - when I wasn't old enough to buy a popsicle.

I did it after my senior year in high school(quite a number of years ago now) and it was an interesting trip, lotsa stuff to see back then - planning on doing it again in the next few years. Lot more interest in it now then there was for some time.
I did grow up directly on 66 though(So. 5th street in Springfield, IL) and am somewhat partial to it since it actually went through towns instead of the interstate bypass, therefore had much more character - also shown the WS6 in the last three Route 66 Mother Road Festivals held in September in Springfield each year

Yes yes... u can stop by and see me too... u have to go right through atlanta il, a town of 1600 people. you can see our paul bunyon statue and our smiley face water tower!! haha what a joke, but yes our town does have all that ****. 66 was the first stretch of road to span from east to west coast i do believe. not 100% on that though. Yes it is faster to get around on highways nowadays since the limit on 66 is only 55mph, but seriously, never seen a cop on that road all my life. and yes it still goes the whole way. its historic and will prob. never be torn down.
Oh and there are quite a few people that still take trips on it. There are usually some nice vettes and old cars of all sorts that are coming through. Also attracts a lot of motorcyclists too.

If theres that much history on that road, then why dont they just renivate (sp) it, I mean id rather have it made into a highway then eventually torn down. And this kinda makes me think about the movie "cars"

Oh ....and I can't believe I'm gonna say this but I saw that movie and what happens in that movie is exaclty what happened to allot of towns off 66 when the Interstates took over.

If they could built it back in the days, they should be able to fix it up, I mean yea it would take a while, but if theres that much history and stuff on it, then it would be worth it.

Well,...then each state that road goes through is gonna have to supply funds for a rebuild and right now I think each state is more concerned about using those funds for things like schools and such.

My X-mas present from my wife was a Route 66 book and map. Plus the promise we will head out on it this year. Not sure if it will truely happen this year (its hard to vacation-we have 2 young sons) and are already going to Texas this week.
But, I find it very cool, even though its glory days were well b4 I was born (1980). There is less and less of it all the time. Seems like a trip any Red Blooded, American Car loving guy (or gal) should take.
Though I'm kinda wondering if my Z28 is right 4 the trip, especially when I lower it more w Strano's springs. I'm thinking some of it may be a little rough...

Isn't that the road James Dean died on? If it is I would like to see the area that the crash happened since I have heard a lot about it. Maybe I'll have to cruise down it one day.

For some reason random deaths makes me laugh.. I mean what would you do if you was driving down this highway and all the sudden an oncomming car just self combusts and you just read this post and thought "wow that must be the random deaths that guy was talking about"... lmao ppl dying isnt funny of course.. just the thought of random cars self combusting as you drive by.. of course if i seen that i would turn off the next road i seen...
