Default 89 octane + 93 octane = 91 octane?

My car has been backfiring a little bit lately, and I usually run 93 octace, because it's either that or 89 around here. I hear most LS1 guys are running 91. So, if I have half a tank of 93 and half of 89, is that equal 91? I'm betting it is, but I figured I'd ask before my baby is a pile of smoldering metal and plastic on the side of the highway. Yeah...I know it's a dumb question.

Believe it or not I just found that out like 3 months ago....that the pump mixes 87 and 93 to make 89 or 91

91 is about all you can find here, except for bp they have 92. Not having 93 is the only thing I miss about living in Indy.

You're engine should knock more w/ the lower octane. The PCM will recognize this knock via input from knock sensors and will then retard the timing. 91 is what GM recommends for the 5.7 L f-bodies due to the 10.X:1 compression ratio.

I think most are running whatever the highest octane is at the pump. For those of us in areas where you can get 93, we mostly all run 93.

The only problem with that gas station is the 100 octane gas is never bought and sits in the tank for ever. I would think it would go stale. I had a friend that worked there in high school and he would tell us that people would pull up to that pump and fill there car with the 100 octane and then try to refuse to pay for it because they didnt know that it was race fuel only.

Don't worry about it, just run premium. You actually want to run the LOWEST octane you can that won't cause detonation. If you don't have any way to monitor knock retard, just play it safe and go with 91 or 93.

91-93 octane is plenty. No reason to use 100 octane in a stock LS1. It will only hurt MPG and do absolutely nothing to help power.
