Default Strange Issue........

...Well yeah, this may seem dumb to some of you but I find it to be an issue. My odometer, I believe, is adding more miles than I am actually traveling and its obviously causing a decrease in the value of my T/A. I've tested it compared to other cars and mine always records more than theirs. For example, my older bro's 02 Mustang GT recorded 5.6 miles on a trip and mine recorded 6.3 which extended over a longer trip would make a big difference due to it being off by that high of a percentage. How would I go about fixing this? Its getting obscene that I live in suburbs and never leave the limits of them and I travel more than "100 miles" a week. Also, this completely throws off my gas mileage calculations which scares the crap out of me because as it stands I am barely getting 16 mpg driving like a granny with these pumped up mileage numbers.

Did you change your rear end gears? Or did someone before you? That would cause you to record more miles and throw off your speedometer.

It's probably one of these issues:

- Someone re-tuned for a different tire size or gears that are no longer on the car without setting the PCM back to stock.

- Someone changed the gears and didn't re-tune.

- Someone changed the tire size and didn't re-tune.

Thank you all for your informative responses. I'm at 68mph at 2000RPMs so rear-gears isn't the issue. So, I assume someone had larger tires on it and got it calibrated for them...than neglected to tune back before I got it.
Thanks again.

Don't compare your miles to ones recorded on another car. How do you know the reading on the other car is correct? There are mile post markers on the road to help police and emergency services reach accident sites, etc. "MVA at MP 34 Rte 202" motor vehicle accident at mile post 34, hwy 202. You've seen them, little post by the side of the road says 34 on it and later down the road you see 33. Find one, reset trip meter and drive a couple miles. They should be accurate within a few yards and then you will know if it's really your car.

My GPS receiver works great for this kind of stuff. Almost every vehicle I've ever used it in was a little bit off. A truck I drove at work had the wrong size tires on it, when the speedometer read 62 mph it was going 65.
