Question I wonder what the deal is with this car...

Looking at some other forums etc I finally found this car on the net, a '02 SS that looks good and all. Clean and looks like it's low mileage.

They advertise it as 16,000 miles, picture of gauge cluster says 15,233 miles. OK so they put some miles on it since taking the pictures... no biggie.

Then I run a CarFax on it... and CarFax report says the last mileage reported was 12/10/2007 @ 26,902 miles...... WTF?

I wonder if they swapped clusters?

Anyone care to chime in?

I was thinking about getting it until I noticed this.

There's a good chance it might be a typo. Change the 2 to a 1 and it's 16,902k miles. Just my .02

yea its a good chance its a typo. A friend did a carfax for me on my car. At one point since I owned it the mileage said like 30k when I bought the thing with 60k and now has 83k. So there are errors.

prob a typo, I think they get that info when you get it inspected or registered so maybe a problem with that

may be a typo but i would ask the person selling the car about to get his reaction. carfax can also get mileage from some dealerships...

It is a red flag to be concerned about. It can be clarified very easy by the owner however with just some simple documentation. The last few oil changes or maintenance repair slip or anything that documents mileage. If the owner can't (or won't) supply this info I wouldn't touch the thing. It would bother you the entire time you owned the car, wondering how many miles were really on the odometer. Most states require declaration of any odometer discrepancies as well, such as labels on the inside of door panels, etc... Of course some people will not even comply legally so it is always something to keep in mind.

The advice above sounds pretty good. Simple documentation is a great way for the owner to backup his claim, but I'd be leary if he doesn't have any or won't show it to you.

I had a mint '86 Mustang SVO with 53K on it. When I was selling it the buyer said the carfax showed 58K or so. Turns out the douchebag who conducted the last emissions test typed in the mileage wrong! That info is sent straight to Austin and is irreverseable. I was pissed. At the rate I drove, it would take a couple years to surpass the typo and look "legit". He bought the car anyway but still.......

Maybe THAT'S what happened!

Beleive it or not, this happens a lot at emissions test centers. When I took my '00 WS6 in for it's first emissions test in 2004, it had 8,300 miles on it. The *** at the test center put down that the car had 83,000 miles.

Funny thing was, they must have just deleted the mileage completely. When I sold the car later that year, I had a friend run a carfax for me just to see what it would show. It showed that the car passed emissions, but it didn't specifiy any mileage at all.

Ya that would have to be corrected before I bought it. Otherwise its a TMU car and the discount would have to be pretty big.
