Default DOD on an LS1?

I was just wondering if it's possible. Some guy did it with his ford taurus on Yahoo.

I'd like to know about one for LT1 also. Some company ought to come out with one for V8's. You know that **** would sell.

I assume you're referring to displacement on demand systems.

Yes, when I did my headers, I forgot to hook the passenger side coil harness and it ran on 4 cylinders, lol. Shaking pretty bad, but I wonder how it would be with the right cylinders unplugged. It's morning, I might be talking out of my ***.

Possible? Sure, with enough time, money and knowledge.

But why???

If fuel efficiency is of a concern to somebody, you might want to consider some other ride. Not making your LS1 a DOD engine.

My M6 gets 30mpg on the highway... Thats where most of my driving is done. It would be very cool to squeeze more out of it with DOD though. My dads truck has it and it saves a nice chunk of change.

Im onboard with dbrown.....if it saves gas/money, even a small amount then the question should be why not do it?

Yeah, I think 30mpg is good period. LS1's are capable of it, and they're v8's too, why bother with something that works efficiently already? Hell, not even all 4cyl's get 30mpg.
After the cost (assuming) of developing and setting forth a DOD system, you'd have to drive a **** ton of miles to earn that money back.

Simply enough, leave the car stock. Change your fuel filter, etc..
Now it would be cool to see this done on the other hand. Who knows man, develop one and you could be sitting on a gold mine. Well worth the development cost in that aspect, especially with todays fuel costs. You might need to check with the rights to this type of system though. GM could own the patent.

I don't think it would be worth thinking about, let alone spending money on. If you're getting 30mpg with the M6 I think that's pretty damn good with a 345+hp car. On the LS4 we get mid to upper 20's with DOD on the highway. Granted the LS4 W-bodies weigh more, only have 303hp, and have no M6, but still. And those who have disabled DOD with a tune say they achieved no worse gas mileage. While I wouldn't go as far as to say "it doesn't work" it's not something that I really cared about when buying a car because I don't think it's making THAT big of a difference.

2007 hemi trucks have these systems, under a different name of course.

The blocks are different for DOD on Gen IV's. They have oil channels built in that allow the DOD cylinders to be turned off and on under computer control.

I'm with RS, it simply won't work. I believe that with DOD they make the valves close on the cylinders that are shut off so that they operate more freely as if they weren't there. If we were to put such as system in the LS1, prepare for a completely redesigned engine. If what I said above was true, the valvetrains need to be modified to have the ability to shut off the cylinders. Seems like too much work for too little of a payback. If your worried about gas, I would get something more efficient. Unfortunately gas makes me drive my Z less no matter how hard I try. $14 to drive 54 miles isn't really encouraging at times like this.

I think it would be a cool experiment, but thats pretty much it. If you really, really need gas mileage, drop the $500 for an old honda bike or geo metro and get 60mpg. On the other hand, I've been driving my dads newish 2007 dodge ram with the 4.7 V8 in it this week and it averages 14.8 mpg. Driving really conservatively. I think our LS1s do pretty well on gas.

you 30 mpg people, will one of you step up and post your milage at fill up, then drive around and fill at same pump and post your milage and gallons to fill so WE here on the web can do the math. i just dont believe a v8 gets 30 mpg!

I don't either. When I do just about all highway driving with my car, I get 26 to 27MPG. But even when I merely do "mostly" highway driving, I'm down around 20.

My dad's ls3 corvette does 20 in town and 30-31 on a trip, runs 11's at the track also, beat that... it all comes down to 3 things, power to weight ratio, engine efficiency, and gearing.
