Hurst Shifter sucks and so do I!
Well, I just got my car two days ago and I couldn't help but play with it. Idk what is going on but I'm just gonna say i missed the 3=4 shift and went into 2nd twice. One time at 4.5k and the other at 4k. The first time the rear hopped and the low traction light came on, the tack jumped to about 6.3k and I immediately pushed the breaks then the clutch and into neutral. Second time, rpms didn't go as high bc I was only doing 70mph. Still, I probably bent a few rods which pisses me off. The car seems normal and has no ticks or noise from the engine. It has normal power and everything. I pray to god I didn't damage it, but after reading threads about I know I'm doomed. Well, hopefully it will be okay. Any words of encouragement will help lol.

get a b&m ripper, or a pro 50 shifter! you will be so much happier and you wont ever miss a shift again!!! i used to miss 3rd with my hurst whenever i would bang through the gears in my lt1 car... then i got a b&m and couldnt be happier! i also have a pro 50 in my ws6 and i actually like that better than the b&m. either one of them is good...

From 4500rpm you probably did not hurt anything. There is a thread on here somewhere about proper hand position when shifting for each gear. I wrap my hand over the top of the shifter for the 3-4 shift and just pull straight back. Some people grip the shifter from the left side to make sure they don't hit 2nd, although it is a little awkward. I agree that an aftermarket shift will help a lot.

You didn't necessarily bend any push-rods. 6,300rpm isn't that high. Corvette rev limiters are set at 6,400rpm with the same push-rods. And I wouldn't blame the shifter, I've been using a Hurst for 5yrs and have never gone into the wrong gear with it. I did do a 3-2 shift once with the stock shifter though. It wheel hopped a little but I caught it early and the rpm's didn't go above 6,000. My push-rods were fine.
My advice would be to learn the car a little more before driving it that hard.

To help with the 3-4 shift, I can recommend you a few things that will prevent that from becoming a 3-2 downshift.
First, grab a poly transmission mount. Energy or prothane, the energy one requires a bit of modding, the prothane does not. This will keep the transmission relatively in the same spot during the high torque twist that moves the damn transmission around.
Second, grab a short stick. WS6Store, Lou's, UMI or whatever. The stock stick with it's rubber isolator makes for a deceptive feel as to where the shifter wants to go.
Third, practice. The 3-4 shift is a straight pull back. Odds are you are adding a bit of tension to yourself which may cause some shifts to "hit" the 2 gate. Think of it this way, pull back with a little tension to the passenger side. 3-4 should be parallel to the length of the car front to back. Do little things like adjusting your seat a bit closer to the front or farther to make sure full clutch press just has a little bend in your knee, not full extension or too much bend. You don't want the press of the clutch to alter your seat position. It's all in the little details.

I never liked the feel of the short shifters.. I know theyre a lot better for performance, But I just dont like how they feel. It feels weird going through the gears... A lot different than what i'm used to with the stock shifter.
I dont have much experience with them, and thats probibly why I'm not a big fan of them. I guess with time though, and a little more practice, my opinions would probibly change.

There's only one thing you need to know and it will never happen again. The stick is self centering, so if you let off on the stick it springs to the 3-4 slot, then just pull straight back. I also did the same thing first day I bought mine. Read about the self centering and it has never happened again. Don't swap your shifter, save the money for something worth doing.
