Default Head Rest Cover Removal

I removed my leather head rest covers today to send them off to Grant to get some TA logos embroidered on. When I was taking them off, the foam had a thin protective plastic covering, almost like a plastic bag from the grocery store. It got pretty shredded while I was pulling them off so I just ripped the rest of this thin plastic off. Does that plastic actually do anything to protect the foam in there? Is it really that important? Will it make the cover harder to apply without it?

proably just a moisture barrier, but when you put them back on sprinkle a little baby powder in them and they will slide on much easier, i learned it from re-doing boat cushions .
