SS Z28 4th gen?
I'm having a debate with one of my friends. And he's convinced that they made a SS Z28 4th gen Camaro. The only thing I can think of that he could remotely conceive would be an SS Z28 first gen, but even then I don't know of any... only RS SS's.
Thanks for the input guys.

A Z28 SS, with both badges..? I've NEVER seen one.. It's his "friends" car. He said it's a Z28 with the SS package. It's got both badges on the bumper and on the fenders.

Since the SS was an OPTION on the Z28, the title for the SS will state Z28 on it. When SLP made (transformed?) the Z28's into SS's they removed the Z28 badging and added the SS badging. The way to verify if it's a REAL SS is by the code on the door, since the title will say it's a Z28.

The 98+ SS's are not "Z28 SS" cars. They are "SS". The 96-97 cars were SLP conversions. They were all built as Z28s (so they will have RPO Z28 on the SPID), and were then taken to SLP and made into SuperSports. As I recall, their floormats actually say "CAMARO Z28 SS". For model year 1998, GM did the SS package in-house, and no longer contracted SLP do to them (so they were built as SSs, not as Z28s).

‘98+ SS cars were still converted by SLP. SLP will provide you a build number for your ‘98+ SS car. SLP even offered multiple options for the LS1 SS cars, including a 345hp package by 2002 that included a Blackwing airbox lid and SLP dual/dual exhaust. Other options included chrome wheels, SLP spec’ed Bilstein suspension, SS grille, floor mats, key fob, synthetic fluids package, center mount exhaust, etc.
The SPID sticker for an actual ‘98+ SS car will in fact contain both the “Z28” RPO and the “WU8” RPO (WU8 = SS package).
There was never a 4th gen Camaro that displayed both the “SS” and “Z28” badging on the exterior of the car from the factory. In 1996 (and perhaps 1997?) there was a plaque affixed to the center console that displayed both the SS and Z28 logo, but only the “SS” badge would appear on the exterior of the car.
So technically, your friend is correct. ALL 4th gen SS Camaros are also Z28s. However, none of them ever came from the factory (or from SLP) with both badges on the outside. If he’s seen one like that, then it was something custom and not original.

1996 was the only year that they were called Z28/SS's. The plaque on the center console and key fobs and everything say "Z28/SS", but it has all SS badging on the outside, no Z28 badges. With all vin checks for 4th gen SS's, Z28 will be shown though, not SS. Go technically 96's were Z28/SS's and all the years following were all SS's, with SS badging (except the air filter lid on the 97 SS's still say Z28/SS), but do come up as Z28's.

The air box, and the floormats said "Z28 SS" on them. SLP even included a keyfob that had Z28 SS on it. I can't remember if the updated interior on the 97 included a "CAMARO Z28 SS" dash emblem or not.
As a side note: The first test mules for the SLP conversion program DID have both the Z28 and SS exterior emblems, but they dropped the Z28 emblems for the production version.

If they were a 96 or 97 they had "Z28 SS" badging, but not on the exterior of the car.

This is not correct.

The 96 was going to be mine, but I wanted a black LS1 SS more than a red LT1 SS.
