Default Oil change ever 3k miles/3 months....what about...

I don't drive across town and back every day now for work. My job is like 3 miles down the road or so. I changed my oil back in June (Mobile 1 Synthetic 10w30). It is now October and I have maybe 1500 miles on that oil.....4 months later. Isn't mostly local driving worse on the oil/motor? Just needing some opinions on this. Do I change the oil every 3 months now or wait till I've gone 3k miles?

Six months is a good time line, if you don't drive much at all.

My personal system, because mine is a daily driver, is to change my oil when the seasons change or every 3 months. I don't bother tracking mileage and I figure that 4 times a year with good synthetic oil is plenty. But if you don't drive it much, or if you don't get the engine up to temperatures that will drive the moisture off, I would still change it twice a year regardless of mileage. Temperature changes in the air in your engine (when it's sitting) will cause moisture to condensate inside. And a couple miles isn't enough to get everything hot enough to drive that moisture off.

You can ask for all the opinions you like and choose whatever flavor sounds good to you, but the only way your going to know whats really going on with your car is to get your oil analyized. Blackstone Labs is one of the places available for this.

I'm currently on 6000 mile change intervals with my driving style and GC 0W-30 - even at this point the oil is still viable for further usage (read: very low wear metals and TBN value still good).

With synthetic oil you should be fine for 6 months minimum with that kind of mileage. You are not going to damage anything. Even dino oil won't hurt your engine in 6 months time with low miles. Changing more often is just overkill and a waste of good $$. Now if you start adding the miles on again, then the timetable changes. These are good strong engines. Don't worry about it. You see the high miles being put on these LS1's and I can almost assuredly state that many 100k + cars have the oil changed maybe once a year or after 7500 miles each time and running a quart low. I certainly would NEVER do that but that is how strong the engines are.
