Car almost dies while driving then wont start

Car almost dies while driving then wont start so i was making a 500 mile trip last night and while heading down the interstate the whole dash lights up and the headlights go out for a sec penand the car almost dies. well it stops for a bit but after i take a off ramp exit to rest it does it again and keeps up till i park it and it dies. I tried to start it but nothing happened at all if i turned the key to the accesorys the radio came on. anyway i popped the hood and jiggled the battery wires and it started when i tried again. Anyway what might cause this? it also happened a long time ago to my formula. and someone suggested it was my key cause the lil chip in the key is loose
