Problem with wipers *driving me crazy*
i have a 2001 z28 camaro and the wipers seem to stay on sometimes. the wipers come on with the mist and the switch but they will randomly come up 2 inches out of "hide away" position and go back down again. this happens with the switch off and i can turn the switch on and they will do the normal wiping. if it has anything to do with it my cruise control dont work but it hasnt worked since i got the car (6 months ago) and the wipers just started acting up. any input is appreciated.
thanks,
Brett

Do an advanced search for all posts from user "01sschris". There are 4 or 5 threads that I posted on about wiper problems, but no one has ever responded to my suggestion to unplug the WASHER pump motor up front on the fluid resevoir to see if the wipers work. There is a diode in the wiper switch inside the column that shorts out from overcurrent and causes havoc on the solid state controls in the wiper motor board. Unplugging the WASHER motor will keep the circuit from making a path to ground through the motor. A good diode will conduct current only one direction and with the diode shorted out, it will allow current both directions. Believe me, I spent entirely too long trying to figure out my wiper problems using the factory service manual electrical diagrams. I finally found the problem to be the switch assembly in the column.
When I got new switch, I verified the differences with an ohmmeter between the new and old switch. This is something simple to do simply by disconnecting the WASHER pump and checking wiper operation with it disconnected. If the wipers work correctly, it most definitely is the switch.
I hope this helps

well i unplugged the washer pump at the front of the car and the wipers are back to normal. so does this mean the whole turn signal lever is bad? could that be the problem with my cruise too?

The cruise is completely separate from the wipers. The switch/controls for the cruise are in the stalk itself. You might be able to see 4 small wires coming out of the stalk-they are for the cruise. The stalk will pull out from the wiper switch with a slow firm pull as your turning the stalk back in forth - be sure to disconnect the small wires first. The stalk's twisting motion is what turns the circular wiper switch. When you get the stalk out, you'll see the keyway that turns the switch. In summary, the cruise will have to be diagnosed separately from the wipers unless you find the small plug from the stalk is unplugged.
The wiper switch is a PITA to change out because the steering wheel w/ airbag needs to come off and there are a lot of small parts like washers and screws to keep track of. It wasn't fun fishing the wires out of the column and then the new ones back down either. Can be done pretty easily by someone just taking their time and being organized. I haven't even checked to see what the dealer wants to do this-$$$$. Found the best price for the switch on GM Parts Direct

Can someone tell me how to post pdf files that are over the size limit? I have scanned 3 pages from a 2001 f-body factory service manual including the wiper electrical schematic, a page showing connector pinouts, and wiper motor location. It's 1.77MB
