Where is the temp switch you're talking about?

It's below the first forward spark plug on the driver's side. At first I thought that was the coolant sensor, but when I went to autozone and bought one, they were different. So I went back and it was actually the temperature switch, but they didn't have any replacements. I just came home from work and left the switch unplugged, turned off the car and then I turned it back on...it started right up. Before it wouldn't start. I don't know why the bad switch would cause it not to start.

Can you post a pic of the temp switch?

Does it go into the head or the block?

Here's the one I bought from autozone:

http://www.autozone.com/R,413130/veh...ductDetail.htm

and here are the pics of the melted part(that's just the part of the switch that connects to the car) I got off the one in my car:

That is definitely the coolant temperature sensor.

But the coolant sensor has an oval connection, while the temperature has a round connection that fits the one in the car. I don't know much, so maybe I'm confusing the two.

They are calling the "coolant temp sensor" a temp switch. Thats what I thought, because there isn't anything called a switch.

You need to unscrew the brass part out of the head.

There's no sensor anywhere under the forward spark plug. That sensor goes in right above that spark plug.

Also, its easy to get the wrong temp sensor too. They look close but I ordered the wrong one first time out.

Ok, I think I get. Being a '98 you have two temperature sensors. They must call one of them a "temperature switch" to differentiate. Here is the other one:

http://www.autozone.com/R,2290373/ve...ductDetail.htm

One is for the PCM and one is for the gauge in the dash. Only the one for the PCM would cause any drivability problems. However on my car the one in the cylinder head is for the gauge, but I guess it is different on '98 LS1s.

I don't know, now I'm confused too. The sensor that melted is under the first plug, not above. And since I unplugged it the gauge in the dash stopped working, so now I'm even more confused since I guess that shouldn't have fixed the issue of the car not starting when hot.

The sensor you linked is the first one I bought that didn't fit(oval connection and only two terminals), and I couldn't see another sensor above the plug it would fit into, maybe I'm blind.

Thats right, but they both go into the same hole on the drivers side head. You just have to get the proper one. Only way to be sure you get the right one is by providing your VIN number. I bought one from PepBoys and it was wrong but they had it listed for my 1998 T/A with the 5.7 L. The dealership got it right by using my VIN number.

Ah, so there are two possible type of sensors for the car? Just that one is oval with two terminals and the other is round with three terminals? Well, that oval didn't fit and I ordered the round one, so I guess that has to be the right one.

And you're saying that the sensor will screw into a port BELOW the front spark plug on the drivers side head?

Yeah, it's below the spark plug about 2 inches forward.

Well, we have the same year car, same 5.7L LSx engine with LS6 heads, so you have me stumped.

I'd like to see a picture of that entire area if you can get one with good light.

maybe those wires were shorting and not letting the car start?
the temp screws in above the spark plugs, unless you are confusing plugs with wires and coils.
it does mount below the wire/coil area.
?
